Arabic broken plurals and nonhuman agreement

Beginner to intermediate

A broken plural changes the inside of an Arabic noun, as in كتاب to كُتُب, book to books. Learn the conventional singular and plural together. Plural formation and agreement are separate decisions: a human plural such as طلاب takes human plural agreement, while ordinary nonhuman plurals usually take feminine singular agreement in Standard Arabic.

Learn a lexical pair rather than a universal suffix

Broken plurals are regular parts of Arabic vocabulary even though they do not share one single ending. Their internal vowels and sometimes additional consonants differ from the singular. Book and books form one useful pair; house and houses form another. A learner needs to recognize both members because the plural may not resemble the singular closely enough to recover it immediately.

The term broken does not mean defective, informal, or grammatically wrong. It describes a pattern of internal change, contrasted with a sound plural that adds an ending. Both types appear in formal Standard Arabic. A human noun can have a broken plural, and a nonhuman noun can have a sound plural, so formation alone does not determine how the noun behaves in a sentence.

Create a vocabulary record with the singular, its gender, the conventional plural, and one short phrase. A guessed form based on an English plural rule is less useful than one verified pair. The practice uses the explicit pairs introduced here rather than expecting you to invent unfamiliar plurals.

كتاب وكُتُب

A book and books.

بيت وبُيوت

A house and houses.

Notice recurring patterns without overpredicting

The pair kitab and kutub shows a short internal vowel pattern replacing the singular’s long vowel. Bayt and buyut show another pattern. Other useful pairs include باب and أبواب, door and doors, and درس and دروس, lesson and lessons. Recognizing repeated shapes helps you organize vocabulary, but a pattern is not a promise that every similar singular takes the same plural.

A noun may also have more than one accepted plural, sometimes with differences in use or meaning. A dictionary can show those possibilities. The lesson gives one ordinary form for each selected noun and does not mark a different documented form wrong merely because it is absent from this small set. The challenge asks about the supplied conventional pair.

Short vowels matter when you read a plural aloud. Unvoweled كتب can represent different words and forms in different contexts, including books and a form of write. A complete sentence, a noun modifier, or explicit vowel marks help identify the reading. Learn the sound with the written form.

باب وأبواب

A door and doors.

درس ودروس

A lesson and lessons.

Keep human plurals human in agreement

The noun طالب has the familiar broken plural طلاب, students. The plural refers to people, so ordinary masculine or mixed human plural agreement is appropriate in the patterns practiced here. الطلاب مشغولون means the students are busy. The adjective’s sound plural ending does not force the noun itself to use a sound plural.

This shows why a sentence can combine different plural formation types. The noun may be broken while its adjective is sound. Agreement concerns features and grammatical relationships, not a requirement that both words have identical internal spelling. If the noun is an object, the adjective’s case changes according to its own inflectional class.

The human versus nonhuman distinction is a useful introductory guide for these ordinary examples. Specialized personification and literary uses can behave differently. Do not extend the lesson’s practice rule into a claim that every Arabic text must describe animals, objects, or abstract things in only one possible stylistic way.

الطلاب مشغولون.

The students are busy, referring to a masculine or mixed group.

هؤلاء الطلاب هنا.

These students are here.

Use feminine singular descriptions for ordinary nonhuman plurals

In basic Standard Arabic, a nonhuman plural commonly takes feminine singular agreement. Thus الكتب جديدة, the books are new, uses a feminine singular adjective. The singular book is masculine, but that does not force the plural adjective to remain masculine. Number and the kind of referent affect the agreement pattern.

The same rule is not limited to broken plurals. A sound plural such as كلمات, words, also ordinarily takes a feminine singular adjective. Conversely, the broken human plural students does not take that pattern simply because its internal form changes. First identify the referent, then the grammatical number, and only then choose the agreement.

The rule applies to the descriptive relationship while leaving the noun genuinely plural in meaning. Saying the books are new does not turn several books into one female object. English translates the meaning with plural books and are; Arabic uses a different agreement convention. Avoid treating agreement morphology as a literal count of objects.

الكتب جديدة.

The books are new.

الأبواب مفتوحة.

The doors are open.

Follow the referent rather than the plural’s spelling

Describe several books as new.

  1. Retrieve the plural كتب.
  2. The referent is nonhuman and plural.
  3. Choose feminine singular جديدة.

الكتب جديدة.

Choose matching demonstratives and references

For an ordinary nonhuman plural near the speaker, use feminine singular هذه in the introductory standard pattern. هذه الكتب means these books. The human plural demonstrative هؤلاء instead appears with people, as in these students. The English word these therefore does not select one Arabic demonstrative independently of the noun it accompanies.

A definite noun following a demonstrative creates a phrase such as these books. Without the article, هذه كتب can be a complete nominal statement, these are books. Both may be useful, but they perform different jobs. Identify whether you are naming a set inside a larger sentence or making a statement about what the objects are.

A later pronoun referring to the nonhuman plural can likewise be feminine singular: هي جديدة, they are new, when the books are the established referent. The English translation uses they because it follows the real plural meaning. The Arabic pronoun follows the taught agreement pattern.

هذه الكتب جديدة.

These books are new.

الكتب هنا. هي جديدة.

The books are here. They are new.

Keep a plural referent across two sentences

Say the books are here and they are new.

  1. Establish الكتب as the referent.
  2. Use feminine singular هي for the ordinary nonhuman plural reference.
  3. Keep the adjective feminine singular too.
Compare your reasoning

الكتب هنا. هي جديدة.

Carry the pattern into clauses and objects

A nonhuman plural can be the subject of a verb. In the ordinary standard pattern, it commonly takes feminine singular verbal agreement: الكتب وصلت, the books arrived. Do not automatically choose a masculine plural verb merely because the English subject translates as they. The agreement controller is the Arabic noun phrase in its actual use.

When a pronoun suffix refers back to a nonhuman plural object, the feminine singular suffix is likewise common. قرأتُها, I read them, can refer to previously mentioned books. The verb’s subject ending still identifies I, while the object suffix identifies the books. These are two separate roles inside one word.

A definite relative description can use التي for the nonhuman plural, as in the supplied phrase the books that I read. This is a recognition bridge to the relative clause lesson, not a demand to master all relative pronouns at once. The recurring feminine singular form across adjectives, demonstratives, verbs, and references helps reveal the shared agreement pattern.

الكتب وصلت أمس.

The books arrived yesterday.

هذه الكتب قرأتُها.

These books, I read them.

Keep plural, dual and case decisions separate

Exactly two books belong to the dual category and use dual agreement in the regular patterns here. Several books belong to the plural category and ordinarily use feminine singular agreement. Compare الكتابان جديدان with الكتب جديدة. The difference is grammatical number, not whether books are human or whether their singular is masculine.

Case is another separate decision. A broken plural can be a subject, direct object, or prepositional complement. Some broken plural patterns have special case behavior, so learning a noun’s plural does not automatically teach its entire declension. The initial practice avoids demanding unfamiliar case endings and focuses on the explicitly supplied ordinary forms.

For production, introduce several objects, describe them, and then refer to them in a second sentence. Check that the referent remains clear. Follow with a human plural sentence to make the contrast visible. This tests whether you can transfer the agreement rule into connected meaning instead of recognizing isolated endings on a flashcard.

الكتابان جديدان.

The two books are new.

الكتب الجديدة على الطاولة.

The new books are on the table.

Contrast the students and the doors: these students are busy; these doors are open.
