Give the listener a clear past reference point
A short account becomes easier to follow when its opening establishes when the events happened. Gisteren identifies yesterday, while onlangs and recent place something in the recent past without supplying an exact date. Choose the amount of precision your listener needs. A story about a visit may need only yesterday; an account connecting several appointments may need a particular day or a clearly stated interval.
Keep recent past wording distinct from future wording. Binnenkort means soon, so it does not replace recently in an ordinary report about an event that already occurred. Kortelings has a correct but somewhat old fashioned recent past meaning; its use to mean soon is not standard according to current language advice. You do not need that less common word to tell a clear story. Establish the time with a familiar expression, then let the following sentences continue the same reference unless you explicitly move to another period.

Introduce an event and develop its details
Dutch can use a perfect construction to introduce a completed event, then a simple past to develop the account. For example, a speaker can first say Ik ben naar het onthaal gegaan and continue Daar wachtte ik op Noor. The second sentence adds detail within the already established past situation. This is a useful storytelling pattern rather than a requirement to change tense after a particular number of sentences.
Do not import a rigid English rule that a perfect construction can never occur with a finished past time. Dutch permits combinations such as Gisteren ben ik naar het onthaal gegaan. Auxiliary selection and participle formation still need attention: the going construction here uses zijn and gegaan. Other verbs may use hebben, and a motion verb’s construction matters rather than movement alone deciding every auxiliary. This lesson practices a small reliable set so that your attention can stay on the order of events and the participants involved.

Preserve Belgian time expressions
The words eerst, daarna, and vervolgens can make a sequence explicit: first one step, then another. Toen can also point to a moment already located in the past. In standard Belgian Dutch, temporal dan can refer to a particular past moment as well. It is therefore not automatically wrong in a Belgian account merely because a learner has been taught to reserve it for a future sequence.
At the same time, these words have other uses. A comparison containing dan and a conditional result containing dan are not examples of this particular past time use. Interpret the sentence around the word. For a sequence that should be easy to follow throughout the Dutch speaking area, daarna or vervolgens is often a useful explicit choice. To mark the final step, write ten slotte as two words; joined tenslotte means after all. The exercises retain Belgian temporal dan as a valid option and test whether the event order, actor, and sentence structure match the intended message.
Keep the finite verb second after an opening time phrase
A main clause beginning with daarna, vervolgens, or a longer time phrase normally places its finite verb next, followed by the subject: Daarna belde ik het onthaal. The initial phrase occupies one grammatical position even if it contains several words. Do not count individual written words to decide where the verb belongs. In a sentence with a perfect construction, the auxiliary takes the finite position while the participle remains later.
Past endings also need to preserve the subject. Compare singular ik wachtte with plural we wachtten, or singular ik ging with plural we gingen. The repeated t in waiting reflects the stem and the past ending; it is not a special signal that an event happened twice. Strong verbs can change their stem, so keep a useful singular and plural pair together when learning a new narrative verb. Check agreement after deciding the event sequence, especially if your story switches from the speaker alone to a group.
Build the message
Begin a sentence with daarna and report that your group went inside.
- Let the opening adverb occupy the first main clause position.
- Choose plural past gingen for we.
- Put the subject after that finite verb.
Daarna gingen we naar binnen.

Distinguish simultaneous activity from the next step
A story sometimes needs to show what someone else was doing during the same interval. Intussen, ondertussen, and in de tussentijd can introduce that relationship. They do not automatically mean that the second action happened only after the first one ended. For example, one person may wait while another looks for an address. Decide whether your message concerns overlap or succession before choosing the connector.
Official advice describes the standard status of Belgian in tussentijd without the article as unclear. The shared forms above give you straightforward choices for careful writing. A clause with terwijl can make the overlap more explicit: Terwijl ik wachtte, zocht Noor het adres. This also changes the sentence structure because the time clause is dependent. As elsewhere in a story, the verb forms and context identify the relevant past situation. A connector by itself does not tell the listener exactly how long either activity lasted.
Use a whole time clause to locate another event
The word toen can introduce a clause meaning when, as in toen de medewerker kwam. That clause has its own subject and verb and gives the past circumstance for another statement. Compare the adverb use in Toen begon het gesprek with the clause in Toen de medewerker kwam, begon het gesprek. The first points back to a time; the second explicitly names an event that locates it.
When the full dependent clause comes first, the following main clause puts its finite verb before its subject. The complete opening clause occupies the first main clause position. If you move the time clause after the main clause, the ordinary subject first main clause can remain: Het gesprek begon toen de medewerker kwam. Both orders can describe the same event relationship. Avoid treating a change in sentence order as proof that the events themselves happened in the opposite sequence. Grammar organizes how you present the relationship; the meaning of the clauses still determines what occurred.
Complete the reasoning
Start with the staff member’s arrival and state that the conversation began then.
- Build the dependent time clause toen de medewerker kwam.
- Treat the whole clause as the opening position.
- Place finite begon before subject het gesprek in the main clause.
Compare your reasoning
Toen de medewerker kwam, begon het gesprek.
Mark a return, a repetition and the interval accurately
A later event may repeat an earlier action or bring someone back to a previous place. Opnieuw and weer are shared standard choices for repetition. Terug is clearly appropriate for movement back or in verbs such as terugkomen and terugbrengen. Its standalone Belgian use meaning again has an unsettled standard status, so the lesson does not turn every occurrence of it into a universal mistake. Keep the intended relationship explicit.
An interval can connect the later event to the earlier one: Twee maanden later kwamen we terug. In ordinary standard counting, months take plural maanden after numbers above one. The singular in twee uur or drie jaar should not be extended automatically to months. A separable verb also keeps its structure: Ik vulde het formulier opnieuw in describes filling in the form again. Before ending the account, check who returned or repeated the action, how much time passed, and whether the result is actually known.
See it in a sentence

Notice the difference
Common mistakes
Keep the stated time reference
Instead ofMorgen bezoek ik het gebouw.
For this meaningGisteren bezocht ik het gebouw.
The alternative changes the visit to tomorrow. The opening time word and past verb preserve yesterday’s completed visit.
Preserve the order of events
Instead ofEerst ging ik naar het gebouw. Daarna belde ik.
For this meaningEerst belde ik. Daarna ging ik naar het gebouw.
The markers now describe going first and calling afterward. The sequence markers make the requested order explicit.
Keep the requested past presentation
Instead ofIntussen zoekt Noor het adres.
For this meaningIntussen zocht Noor het adres.
The present form changes the requested past account into a present or historical present presentation. The simple past maintains the narrative’s stated past time.
From understanding to using
Make your own example.
Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.
Your turn 1
Tell a three step past sequence: first you called reception, then you went to the building, and finally you filled in a form.
Compare with a model
Eerst belde ik het onthaal. Daarna ging ik naar het gebouw. Ten slotte vulde ik een formulier in.
First I called reception. Then I went to the building. Finally I filled in a form.
The sequence markers distinguish the three steps, and each main clause puts its finite verb after the opening phrase. The last clause separates the finite verb from the particle of filling in.
- Is the order the one requested?
- Does each opening time phrase precede the finite verb?
- Did the filling in verb retain its particle?
Your turn 2
Describe waiting at the entrance while Noor looked for the address. Then say that your group returned two months later.
Compare with a model
Ik wachtte aan de ingang. Intussen zocht Noor het adres. Twee maanden later kwamen we terug.
I waited at the entrance. Meanwhile, Noor looked for the address. Two months later, we returned.
The first two sentences describe overlapping activity, while the third moves to a later return. The plural count names the interval, and the last verb agrees with the group.
- Did the overlapping activity stay distinct from the later return?
- Did the month noun take the standard plural?
- Does the returning verb agree with the group?
