Disagree clearly and offer an alternative

Beginner to intermediate

Use Ik ben het niet helemaal eens for partial disagreement, then name the specific issue and offer an alternative. Both akkoord zijn met and akkoord gaan met are standard. Ik begrijp het voorstel means you understand it; it does not by itself mean you agree.

State agreement without inventing a regional error

Both Ik ben akkoord met het voorstel and Ik ga akkoord met het voorstel are standard Dutch. The first is not an error merely because some older advice discouraged it in Belgium. Another useful expression is Ik ben het eens met het voorstel. Learn the whole frame, including het in the last expression. The words let you state agreement clearly; they do not show whether you have checked every practical detail of a proposal.

A useful response separates the part you accept from the part you want to discuss. For example, you may accept an idea while questioning its timing. Naming the relevant part prevents a listener from interpreting one reservation as rejection of the entire plan. Conversely, do not use a broad statement of agreement when you mean only that you understand what someone said. Ik begrijp het voorstel reports understanding, while Ik ben akkoord reports agreement. These are distinct conversational commitments, even when a friendly tone makes both sound cooperative.

Refer back to the proposal

When the object of met is a proposal or idea already mentioned, ermee can replace the repeated phrase. Ik ben ermee akkoord means I agree with it. The preposition met changes to mee inside this combination. Write the adjacent combination together. It is not built by adding a space merely because English uses two words in with it.

The two parts can be separated by other sentence material: Ik ben er niet helemaal mee akkoord. This does not make the reference disappear; er still points to the previously mentioned proposal. The spelling follows the actual placement. Do not confuse this construction with mee belonging to a verb such as meegaan. Also keep a person distinct from a proposal: Ik ben het eens met Noor names the person whose view you share. A clear antecedent helps the listener identify exactly what you accept or question.

Choose how much disagreement you actually mean

Niet helemaal means not entirely, leaving room for partial agreement. Helemaal niet expresses a much stronger rejection, roughly not at all. The difference is the scope of the negative, not a special Belgian rule. Compare Ik ben het niet helemaal eens met dat voorstel with Ik ben het helemaal niet eens met dat voorstel. Choose the statement that accurately reflects your position rather than inserting a softer phrase automatically.

A response can name what works before introducing a reservation with maar: Het idee is goed, maar de timing is moeilijk. This structure keeps two propositions visible. It does not logically cancel the compliment, although tone and context can affect how it sounds. Avoid vague reservations that leave the other person guessing what must change. A concrete point such as the date, cost estimate, or unclear instruction is easier to discuss than a general negative judgment about the person who suggested the plan.

Build the message

You accept part of an idea but have reservations. Avoid a total rejection.

  1. Choose the agreement frame ik ben het eens.
  2. Place niet before helemaal to limit the degree of agreement.
  3. Keep the proposal explicit if several ideas are being discussed.

Ik ben het niet helemaal eens met het voorstel.

Ask for clarification before treating a comment as rejection

A direct clarification question can begin Wat bedoelt u precies?, what exactly do you mean? A more specific version repeats the uncertain part: Wat bedoelt u met een andere planning? The question requests information; it does not claim that the other person is wrong. In a familiar conversation you can use je, but keep address consistent through the exchange instead of switching because one sentence happens to be a question.

In Belgian Dutch, bemerking is a standard word that can refer to a remark or a critical comment. Opmerking is also available throughout the Dutch speaking area, while aanmerking usually has a critical sense. The noun by itself is not enough to decide whether someone rejects a proposal. Read or hear the actual content of the comment. A useful next question is Gaat uw opmerking over de datum?, asking whether the remark concerns the date rather than defending an unrelated part of the plan.

Give a reason with the right clause shape

With want, the reason has ordinary main clause order: Die dag lukt niet, want ik werk dan. With omdat, the reason is a dependent clause: Die dag lukt niet omdat ik dan werk. These two useful ways of explaining a reservation organize the verbs differently. The reason gives the listener something concrete to consider instead of leaving disagreement unexplained.

If you begin with the entire reason clause, the following main clause has the finite verb before its subject: Omdat ik dan werk, kan ik niet komen. The fronted clause occupies the first position of that main clause. For longer verb groups, avoid reducing dependent order to a rigid rule that one particular verb must always be literally last. This lesson practices short groups with a supplied natural order. It also keeps reasons factual: explaining a schedule conflict is different from inventing an excuse to make a refusal sound acceptable.

Offer an alternative as a question or suggestion

Kunnen we een andere datum kiezen? asks whether the group can choose another date. We zouden een andere datum kunnen kiezen presents that alternative more tentatively. Neither sentence means that the change is already approved. Keep the proposed action concrete and give the listener a chance to respond. A suggestion about one manageable detail often provides a clearer next step than a long list of possible changes.

In the second pattern, plural we takes zouden, while kunnen and kiezen remain infinitives. A singular speaker can say Ik zou eerst de planning bekijken, I would first look at the schedule. Context makes this an offered recommendation; zou has other uses outside advice. Do not promise that one modal form guarantees politeness. Relationship, timing, tone, and whether you acknowledge the other person’s concern all influence how a suggestion is received.

Complete the reasoning

Suggest that the group choose another date.

  1. Use plural we with zouden.
  2. Name the alternative een andere datum.
  3. Keep kunnen and kiezen as infinitives.
Compare your reasoning

We zouden een andere datum kunnen kiezen.

Confirm the outcome instead of assuming agreement

After discussing an alternative, check what was actually decided. Spreken we donderdag af? asks whether Thursday is the agreed meeting day. Dus we spreken donderdag af presents that as your understanding, which the other person can confirm or correct. If the response is still tentative, preserve that uncertainty rather than reporting a firm agreement to someone else.

A short message can distinguish a decision from a remaining question: De datum staat vast, maar de plaats nog niet. The omitted repeated words are understandable because the contrast is explicit. In a longer written message, repeat enough information to avoid an ambiguous pronoun. For example, name the proposal or date if several alternatives have been discussed. The final check is practical: what did you agree to, what remains open, and who needs to answer next? Those distinctions make the exchange useful without requiring exaggerated praise or an unnecessarily formal style.

See it in a sentence

Ik ben akkoord met het idee.

I agree with the idea.

State agreement without inventing a regional error.

Ik ben er niet helemaal mee akkoord.

I do not entirely agree with it.

Refer back to the proposal.

Ik begrijp het plan, maar de datum is moeilijk.

I understand the plan, but the date is difficult.

Choose how much disagreement you actually mean.

Gaat uw opmerking over de datum?

Does your comment concern the date?

Ask for clarification before treating a comment as rejection.

Omdat ik dan werk, kan ik niet komen.

Because I work then, I cannot come.

Give a reason with the right clause shape.

We zouden een andere datum kunnen kiezen.

We could choose another date.

Offer an alternative as a question or suggestion.

De datum staat vast, maar de plaats nog niet.

The date is fixed, but the place is not yet fixed.

Confirm the outcome instead of assuming agreement.

Ik ga akkoord met de datum.

I agree with the date.

The frame akkoord gaan met also expresses agreement in standard Dutch.

Ik begrijp uw bemerking.

I understand your comment.

Bemerking is standard in Belgium; the actual content determines whether it is critical.

Die dag lukt niet, want ik werk dan.

That day does not work because I am working then.

Want leaves ordinary main clause order.

Kunnen we vrijdag afspreken?

Can we meet on Friday?

The modal keeps afspreken as a joined infinitive.

Dus we spreken donderdag af.

So we are meeting on Thursday.

This checks the speaker’s understanding rather than proving that agreement already exists.

Notice the difference

Common mistakes

Keep the fixed agreement frame

Instead ofIk ben eens het met Noor.

For this meaningIk ben het eens met Noor.

This order breaks the fixed agreement frame. Het belongs before eens in this expression.

Separate understanding from agreement

Instead ofIk ben akkoord met het voorstel.

For this meaningIk begrijp het voorstel.

Akkoord states agreement, which goes beyond the requested report of understanding. Begrijpen reports understanding.

Keep the dependent reason order

Instead ofDie dag lukt niet omdat werk ik dan.

For this meaningDie dag lukt niet omdat ik dan werk.

This uses direct main clause inversion after omdat. Omdat introduces the dependent clause.

From understanding to using

Make your own example.

Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.

Your turn 1

Accept the idea, explain that the date does not work because you are working, and ask for another date.

Compare with a model

Ik ben akkoord met het idee, maar die dag lukt niet omdat ik werk. Kunnen we een andere datum kiezen?

I agree with the idea, but that day does not work because I am working. Can we choose another date?

The response separates agreement with the idea from a specific scheduling problem. Omdat gives the reason with dependent order, and the question proposes a concrete alternative without announcing a decision that nobody has made. Other natural formulations are possible if they preserve these three functions.

  • Name the specific reservation.
  • Keep the reason factual.
  • Ask about the alternative date instead of presenting it as settled.

Your turn 2

Say you do not entirely agree with the proposal, then ask whether the other person’s comment concerns the date.

Compare with a model

Ik ben er niet helemaal mee akkoord. Gaat uw opmerking over de datum?

I do not entirely agree with it. Does your comment concern the date?

Er and mee refer back to a known proposal, while niet helemaal limits the disagreement. The second sentence checks the topic of the comment. Uw marks the listener’s comment and fits the formal address; it is not interchangeable with personal u.

  • Make the proposal’s antecedent clear.
  • Preserve the intended degree of disagreement.
  • Distinguish u from uw.
