Distinguish a finite verb from a second action
An infinitive names an action without carrying the ordinary agreement of a finite verb. In Ik probeer te slapen, probeer agrees with ik and slapen names the action being attempted. Changing the subject to we gives We proberen te slapen. The second action does not become a second finite verb. Begin by identifying which verb anchors the clause in person and tense, then build the form selected for the following action.
Dutch does not use one universal connector between every pair of verbs. Modals such as kunnen and moeten commonly take a bare infinitive, while many other expressions take te. Compare Ik kan slapen with Ik probeer te slapen. The relationship selected by the first expression matters more than the English translation of “to.” Learn a frequent verb together with a complete complement pattern. A learner who memorizes only the dictionary meanings may still choose the wrong connector even when every individual word seems appropriate.
Use te in selected complements
Common beginning patterns include proberen te, vergeten te, and besluiten te. Noor vergeet te bellen says she forgets to call; Noor besluit te bellen says she decides to call. The complement states the action affected by trying, forgetting, or deciding. The finite verb can change tense while the infinitive remains the named action: Noor besloot te bellen. Do not add a subject ending to bellen just because Noor is singular.
Some complement constructions also allow om: We besluiten om te wachten. In that use, om introduces the complement and does not necessarily mean “in order to.” The waiting is what is decided, not automatically the purpose of making a decision. This is why a purely word based interpretation can mislead. First identify whether the clause supplies the content required by a preceding expression or adds a reason for doing something. Both may contain om te, but their contribution to the message differs.

Express purpose with om te
Use om ... te to explain what an action is intended to achieve. Ik ga naar de bibliotheek om te studeren describes studying as the purpose of going to the library. The object or other details of the intended action fit inside the infinitive clause: om een boek te lenen. The main action and the purpose remain different parts of the message. An intention is not proof that the intended result actually happened.
In ordinary personal purpose sentences, the unspoken actor of the infinitive is usually understood from the main clause actor. Noor komt om te helpen normally means Noor will help. If another person is supposed to act, use a fuller clause that names that person, such as a suitable zodat clause, rather than placing a new nominative subject inside the simple om te pattern. Make the actor explicit when a short construction would be ambiguous. The purpose phrase is useful precisely because it can omit repeated information that the listener can reliably recover.
Complete the reasoning
Say I am calling for the purpose of confirming the appointment.
- The main action is ik bel.
- Introduce its intended purpose with om.
- Place the object de afspraak before te bevestigen.
Compare your reasoning
Ik bel om de afspraak te bevestigen.
Place te inside a separable verb
A separable infinitive places te between its prefix and its verb. Opbellen becomes op te bellen, meenemen becomes mee te nemen, and invullen becomes in te vullen. These are written as separate words. Compare a bare modal infinitive, Ik moet haar opbellen, with a selected complement, Ik probeer haar op te bellen. The prefix belongs to the lexical verb in both sentences, but the surrounding construction determines whether te intervenes.
An inseparable beginning is not split by this rule. In Ik probeer het verhaal te begrijpen, the complete infinitive begrijpen follows te. Do not decide separability solely by noticing that a word starts with a familiar syllable. Learn the lexical verb and a main clause example showing whether its prefix can separate. In a reflexive phrase such as me aanmelden, the pronoun also remains present: Ik probeer me aan te melden. Prefix spelling and reflexive reference solve different problems and need separate checks.
Build the message
Use proberen to say I am trying to phone her, with opbellen.
- Choose ik probeer as the finite frame.
- Keep haar as the person receiving the call.
- Split opbellen around te: op te bellen.
Ik probeer haar op te bellen.
Keep negation with the intended action
Negation can deny the first action or the infinitive action. Ik probeer niet te lachen normally says I am trying to avoid laughing. It does not mean that I have abandoned the attempt to laugh in every possible context. To avoid ambiguity when denying the attempt itself, use a fuller explanation such as Ik doe geen poging om te lachen. Position helps organize scope, but the surrounding situation and choice of expression also guide interpretation.
The familiar absence of necessity pattern is niet hoeven te: Ik hoef niet te bellen. This removes a requirement to call; it does not say I am trying not to call. The singular main clause model retains te. Official advice allows omission in certain larger hoeven groups, so do not turn this lesson into a universal correction of every missing te. When producing a short message, choose the meaning first: no need, no intention, deliberate avoidance, or failure to perform. Those are different statements even when they all contain a negative word.

Recognize alternatives after helpen
After finite helpen in an ordinary main clause, both a bare infinitive and a te infinitive can be correct: Ik help haar koken and Ik help haar te koken. The existence of one pattern does not make the other a learner error. More expanded complements can include om, as in helping someone to find an address. This verb is a useful warning against forcing every expression into one rigid two category chart without checking its actual constructions.
The actor of the following action also deserves attention. In Ik help Noor om de brief te schrijven, Noor is the person being helped with writing; the sentence does not say only the speaker writes while Noor does nothing. With other selecting verbs, the understood actor may be determined differently. A full example is therefore a better memory unit than an isolated verb plus te. In early production, keep the participants named and avoid chaining several helping, wanting, and trying expressions until you can explain who performs each action.

Use useful adjective and how patterns
Adjectives can introduce practical infinitive information: Dit is moeilijk om te begrijpen and Het is fijn om samen te eten. Learn the complete frame instead of treating om as an ordinary preposition that can freely precede any form. Shared standard Dutch retains te in the familiar mooi om te zien pattern. Omission of te in that particular construction occurs in Belgium, but official advice describes its standard status as unclear.
A separate shortened question pattern, hoe dit te doen, omits an expressed subject and names an unresolved method. The full version hoe ik dit moet doen can be clearer when the actor matters. Belgian standard usage permits a bare infinitive after hoe in suitable constructions, but this specific acceptance does not settle the different adjective pattern. Keeping these limits distinct helps you recognize regional language without applying a broad “Belgians omit te” rule. For your own general course messages, complete te patterns and full finite questions provide dependable starting points.
See it in a sentence
We proberen op tijd te komen.
We are trying to arrive on time.
Distinguish a finite verb from a second action.
Noor besluit om thuis te blijven.
Noor decides to stay home.
Use te in selected complements.
Ik bel om de afspraak te bevestigen.
I am calling to confirm the appointment.
Express purpose with om te.
Ik probeer het formulier in te vullen.
I am trying to fill in the form.
Place te inside a separable verb.
Ik probeer niet te lachen.
I am trying not to laugh.
Keep negation with the intended action.
Ik help Noor om de brief te schrijven.
I help Noor write the letter.
Recognize alternatives after helpen.
Het is fijn om samen te eten.
It is nice to eat together.
Use useful adjective and how patterns.
Ik vergeet de deur te sluiten.
I forget to close the door.
The object belongs to the selected action, not to an extra finite clause.
We besluiten te wachten.
We decide to wait.
Om may also introduce this complement without necessarily giving it a purpose meaning.
Ik help haar koken.
I help her cook.
A bare infinitive is accepted after finite helpen in this main clause.
Ik help haar te koken.
I help her cook.
The te construction is another accepted pattern after helpen.
Ik kom om te helpen.
I am coming to help.
The normal understood helper is the same person as the main subject ik.
Notice the difference
Common mistakes
Use the selected te complement
Instead ofIk probeer slapen.
For this meaningIk probeer te slapen.
The bare form does not fit this ordinary proberen complement. The selected complement uses te slapen.
Place the purpose object before te
Instead ofIk bel om te de afspraak bevestigen.
For this meaningIk bel om de afspraak te bevestigen.
This splits te from its infinitive with the object in the wrong place. The object precedes te plus the infinitive in this purpose phrase.
Separate no need from attempted avoidance
Instead ofIk probeer niet te bellen.
For this meaningIk hoef niet te bellen.
Proberen niet describes trying to avoid the call, a different meaning. Niet hoeven removes the requirement.
From understanding to using
Make your own example.
Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.
Your turn 1
Write that you are trying to register and must fill in a form.
Compare with a model
Ik probeer me aan te melden. Ik moet een formulier invullen.
I am trying to register. I have to fill in a form.
The first selecting verb uses a te complement, with aan before te. The second is a modal and takes the reunited bare infinitive invullen. The reflexive me is required by the registration expression, while the form is the ordinary object of filling in. Do not let one sentence’s pattern overwrite the other.
- Use me for the registering speaker.
- Write aan te melden as separate words.
- Keep invullen bare after moet.
Your turn 2
Explain that you are going to the library to borrow a book and do not need to buy one.
Compare with a model
Ik ga naar de bibliotheek om een boek te lenen. Ik hoef geen boek te kopen.
I am going to the library to borrow a book. I do not have to buy a book.
The purpose of the trip is expressed by om plus the object and te lenen. The second sentence removes a purchasing requirement with hoeven and geen. Borrowing and buying remain distinct lexical actions. Geen negates the indefinite noun phrase, so adding another niet is unnecessary in this model.
- Use om for the trip’s purpose.
- Put each object before its te infinitive.
- Use geen with the indefinite book phrase.
