Recognize a direct instruction without a subject
A basic Dutch imperative addresses someone directly without naming a grammatical subject: Open de deur. The listener is understood as the actor. This structure can give an instruction, invitation, warning, or encouragement. Its social effect depends on context and delivery, so an imperative is not automatically rude. A recipe, a classroom task, and an urgent warning all have reasons to use a concise direct form.
The ordinary imperative is based on the present first person singular form. From ik werk, use Werk rustig; from ik lees, use Lees de tekst. Remove the subject rather than carrying it into the sentence as if every instruction were a question. The same basic imperative can address one person or several people. This differs from languages that require a separate ordinary plural ending on every command. The number of listeners can still affect object or reflexive pronouns elsewhere in the instruction.
Spell the stem instead of adding an automatic t
Because the basic imperative uses the first person form, it does not automatically gain the t associated with many present second and third person forms. Write Word lid, from ik word, rather than adding the present ending seen in hij wordt. Likewise, Vind de uitgang retains the stem final d without an additional t. Listening alone may not reveal the spelling distinction, so use the first person form as a check.
A verb whose stem already ends in t keeps that letter: Wacht hier. Removing every final t would be just as mistaken as adding one everywhere. Some familiar verbs allow variants such as hou and houd in an imperative; both are accepted. The imperative of zijn is the special form wees. Historical plural forms with t survive in fixed expressions, but they are not the productive everyday pattern to impose on a new instruction to several classmates.
Keep separable actions complete
A separable verb splits in a direct imperative: Bel Noor op, Vul het formulier in, or Doe de deur dicht. The first element is the finite command form, and the separable part completes the action later. Do not leave out the prefix merely because the first verb already sounds like an action. Bel Noor may also be meaningful, but the target expression opbellen needs its own complete pattern.
When instructions contain an object and a location, keep the action readable: Leg het boek op tafel. Here op tafel is a prepositional place phrase, not necessarily the separable prefix of a memorized verb. Compare it with Schrijf het nummer op, where op completes opschrijven. Similar short words can do different jobs. Identify the lexical action before deciding what to move. For a learner’s first instructions, one clear object and one action are enough to practice structure without creating an overloaded sentence.
Add objects and reflexives that match the listener
A subjectless imperative can still contain object pronouns. Help me has the listener as understood actor and the speaker as recipient of help. Bel ons morgen asks the listener to call a group including the speaker. The pronoun is not a subject just because it appears near the verb. Choose the form according to its role: the person acting is understood, while the person affected is expressed by an object form.
A reflexive instruction points back to the listener. Meld je aan uses informal je; Meld u aan uses formal u. In the second sentence, u is reflexive object, not an overt subject, so the imperative stays meld without an added t. For several informally addressed people, Meld je allemaal aan retains the same basic imperative. A plural audience does not require melden as a finite imperative. The added word allemaal can make the group scope explicit.
Build the message
Write a formal subjectless instruction to register, using aanmelden.
- Choose the imperative stem meld.
- Use formal reflexive u as the object, not an overt subject.
- Place the separable prefix aan after the pronoun.
Meld u aan.

Distinguish a true imperative from finite u instructions
Dutch also has directive constructions with an expressed subject, such as Gaat u zitten. These use the ordinary finite form that agrees with the subject u. They have an instructive function but are structurally different from a subjectless imperative. This difference explains the pair Meld u aan and Meldt u zich aan. In the first, u is the reflexive object. In the second, u is the subject and zich is the reflexive object.
Do not correct every instruction containing u by deleting or adding t mechanically. Ask whether a separate subject is present and whether another reflexive fills the object role. Formal u also retains its ordinary present t when inverted, unlike subject jij in many present forms. You can avoid difficult spelling uncertainty by choosing a clear pattern you already know, but recognizing both constructions prevents you from misreading signs, letters, and spoken service instructions. Function and grammatical form are related without being identical.
Complete the reasoning
Now use an overt formal subject and reflexive zich for the same directive.
- The overt subject is u.
- Its finite present form is meldt, with t.
- Add zich for the reflexive and finish with aan.
Compare your reasoning
Meldt u zich aan.

Make a negative instruction and choose a suitable tone
To tell someone not to perform an action, use an imperative with niet in the appropriate scope: Raak de kabel niet aan. The separable action remains complete. With an indefinite noun phrase, geen can be appropriate: Maak geen foto’s. This is an instruction to avoid taking photos, not a statement that photography is unnecessary. U hoeft geen foto’s te maken would instead remove an obligation and leave a choice.
Words such as even, maar, and alstublieft can help shape a request, but they do not guarantee politeness in every context. Kom maar binnen can invite someone in reassuringly, while tone and the relationship still matter. If a favor is substantial, a modal question such as Kunt u me helpen? may fit better than a bare command. State the action clearly and choose the form appropriate to the interaction rather than trying to make a demanding instruction considerate by adding one automatic particle.
Read public instructions and order a short procedure
Signs and procedural lists also use infinitives, such as Hier niet parkeren or Eerst aanmelden. These are recognizable impersonal instruction styles, not ordinary finite imperatives with a missing ending. When the task asks you to write a direct imperative, use the stem construction; when reading a sign, recognize that an infinitive can serve a directive function. The text type helps explain why a grammatically different form communicates a similar action.
A short procedure works best when its steps each name a concrete action. Open de app. Vul uw naam in. Controleer het adres is easier to execute than a long sentence containing several objects and qualifications. Keep informal and formal reference consistent within one procedure unless the audience actually changes. If an instruction depends on a condition, make it explicit: Als de knop groen is, druk erop. The condition controls when the instruction applies. Sequence and conditions matter as much as correctly forming the first verb.

Common mistakes
Do not add a present t to word
Instead ofWordt lid.
For this meaningWord lid.
The t from hij wordt is not added to this subjectless instruction. The imperative uses the first person stem word.
Split the separable imperative
Instead ofInvul het formulier.
For this meaningVul het formulier in.
This reunites the verb in the wrong construction. The imperative splits the separable action.
Keep one imperative form for a group
Instead ofLezen allemaal de tekst.
For this meaningLees allemaal de tekst.
Lezen is an infinitive or plural indicative, not the requested finite imperative. The same basic imperative lees can address several listeners.
From understanding to using
Make your own example.
Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.
Your turn 1
Write three direct formal instructions: open the app, enter your name, and check the address.
Compare with a model
Open de app. Vul uw naam in. Controleer het adres.
Open the app. Enter your name. Check the address.
Each sentence begins with a subjectless imperative. Formal reference appears in the possessive uw, not in an added subject that would alter the verb construction. Invullen separates around the object. Short independent steps make the procedure easy to follow without hiding which action belongs to which item.
- Use stem imperative forms.
- Write uw before naam.
- Keep the prefix in in the filling action.
Your turn 2
Invite an informal listener inside, then ask them not to touch the cable.
Compare with a model
Kom maar binnen. Raak de kabel niet aan.
Come in. Do not touch the cable.
The first instruction functions as an invitation in the supplied context; maar can help make it reassuring. The second gives a clear negative instruction and preserves the separable action aanraken. Politeness does not remove the need for an unambiguous warning when a particular object should remain untouched.
- Use kom for the invitation.
- Keep niet with the prohibited action.
- Retain aan at the end of the second command.
