Hindi past routines and scenes: karta tha or kar raha tha

Beginner to intermediate

Use a habitual form with a past auxiliary for an old routine, such as मैं पढ़ता था, I used to study. Use a progressive form with a past auxiliary for an activity in progress at a past reference time: मैं पढ़ रहा था, I was studying. Both are past, but they give different views of the activity.

Decide whether you mean a pattern or a scene

Imagine describing your school years. A statement about studying every evening presents a repeated pattern across a period. A statement about what you were doing at eight last night opens one scene and describes an activity within it. Hindi expresses that difference through aspect.

The habitual does not say the activity continued without interruption throughout the period. The progressive does not by itself say the activity finished. If completion matters, add a completed event or another sentence. Before selecting endings, answer the practical question: am I describing what normally happened, or what was unfolding then?

Time expressions are clues, not mechanical tense switches. Every evening often supports a habitual reading, but a speaker could describe a temporary period during which something was happening each evening. At eight can locate a progressive scene, but it could also identify the time when a completed event occurred. The practice prompts state the intended viewpoint as well as the time so you can choose one answer. In free production, the speaker chooses how to frame the event. Explain that choice rather than announcing that a particular time word always requires one grammatical form.

मैं स्कूल में रोज़ हिंदी पढ़ता था।

I used to study Hindi every day at school, with masculine agreement.

कल आठ बजे मैं हिंदी पढ़ रहा था।

At eight yesterday, I was studying Hindi, with masculine agreement.

Build a past habitual from the action stem

The habitual participle uses forms such as पढ़ता, पढ़ती, or पढ़ते. A past form of be then locates the pattern in the past. The combination changes from पढ़ती है to पढ़ती थी when a woman’s present routine becomes a past routine.

The object does not control this agreement. A man reading a feminine book uses masculine पढ़ता था, because habitual sentences retain subject agreement. Do not import ne and object agreement from a completed transitive event. The same lexical action can appear in different grammatical constructions.

रीना रोज़ लिखती थी।

Reena used to write every day.

अमन शाम को किताब पढ़ता था।

Aman used to read a book in the evening.

Convert a present routine into a past one

Reena currently writes every day. Describe the former routine instead.

  1. Keep the feminine habitual participle लिखती.
  2. Replace present है with past थी.
  3. Retain the daily time expression to preserve the routine viewpoint.

रीना रोज़ लिखती थी।

Build a past progressive around an unfolding action

The progressive places रहा, रही, or रहे after the bare action stem, followed by a past auxiliary. The action stem does not take the habitual ending as well. A woman writing uses लिख रही थी, not a combination of writing habitual and progressive markers.

A progressive can describe an activity during a broader past period, such as staying in a city for a course. It need not refer to one precisely timed second. Supply a reference frame so the listener knows which period is being described. The duration of the period alone does not choose between habitual and progressive.

रीना पत्र लिख रही थी।

Reena was writing a letter.

उस समय हम दिल्ली में रह रहे थे।

At that time, we were living or staying in Delhi, with masculine or mixed agreement.

Check both parts of agreement

Masculine singular रहा था contrasts with feminine singular रही थी. Masculine plural or respectful agreement uses रहे थे, while feminine plural or respectful agreement uses रही थीं. The auxiliary carries a visible plural distinction even where the feminine progressive form stays the same.

A respectful question to one woman therefore has आप क्या कर रही थीं? Do not count the people and automatically replace the respectful auxiliary with singular थी. Likewise, familiar you and respectful you belong to different address systems even when some masculine agreement forms happen to look alike.

दो महिलाएँ पढ़ रही थीं।

Two women were reading.

आप क्या कर रही थीं?

What were you doing? Respectfully addressing a woman.

Place a completed event inside a background scene

A short narrative can pair a progressive background with a completed event: while I was reading, Reena came. The progressive gives the scene; the perfective moves the narrative forward. The arrival does not tell us whether the reading stopped permanently or simply continued.

Temporal linking words such as जब can establish the relation between clauses. Keep the subject of each clause clear. If the people differ, do not force both actions into one same subject sequence with kar. Each clause has its own agreement and its own role in the story.

The background and foreground distinction concerns the organization of the account. It does not mean one event is unimportant and the other important in real life. Reading may be the speaker’s main concern even when an arrival supplies the point used to locate it. Nor does a completed event automatically interrupt the other activity. The person might keep reading after the visitor arrives. If actual interruption matters, say so in another clause. This protects the learner from a common overreading of English exercises that label every combination of progressive and simple past as an interrupted action.

जब रीना आई, मैं पढ़ रहा था।

When Reena came, I was reading, with masculine speaker agreement.

जब मैं पहुँची, वे बात कर रहे थे।

When I arrived, they were talking, with feminine speaker and masculine or mixed group agreement.

Give the scene a foreground event

A man was reading; Reena arrived during that scene.

  1. Use masculine पढ़ रहा था for the ongoing reading.
  2. Use feminine perfective आई for Reena’s arrival.
  3. Link the clauses with जब while keeping their subjects distinct.
Compare your reasoning

जब रीना आई, मैं पढ़ रहा था।

Keep the past auxiliary in a negative account

Use नहीं to deny a past routine or a past activity in progress. In the ordinary patterns taught here, keep the past auxiliary: मैं नहीं पढ़ता था and मैं नहीं पढ़ रहा था. Dropping it would remove the explicit past reference and can change how the sentence is understood.

A negative routine means the action was not part of the normal pattern; it need not claim that it never happened even once. A negative progressive denies the activity at the relevant time. State that time if the distinction matters, for example yesterday at eight rather than an unspecified past.

मैं पहले वहाँ नहीं जाता था।

I did not use to go there before, with masculine agreement.

मैं उस समय नहीं सो रही थी।

I was not sleeping at that time, with feminine agreement.

Ask a question that matches the account

To ask about an old routine, provide a repeated context such as school days or every Sunday. To ask about a past scene, provide a reference time. The answer then selects both a meaningful aspect and suitable agreement. A bare question what did you do can be too broad to force one aspect.

For the challenge, underline the clue that establishes a routine, scene, or completed event. Then justify the form. In production, describe the same activity in all three ways with different time contexts. That exercise prevents you from treating every English past translation as the same Hindi tense.

A useful self check is to draw a small timeline or describe it aloud. For a routine, mark several repeated occasions in a past period. For a progressive scene, mark one reference point inside an activity. For a completed event, mark the event as a whole. The drawing is a reasoning aid, not a literal measurement of tense. Then remove the English prompt and read only the Hindi. If the selected form now suggests a different viewpoint from the one you intended, revise the verb phrase or add context rather than blaming the time expression alone.

बचपन में आप कहाँ खेलते थे?

Where did you use to play in childhood? Respectful masculine agreement.

कल शाम आप कहाँ खेल रहे थे?

Where were you playing yesterday evening? Respectful masculine agreement.

Notice the difference

Common mistakes

Do not add ne to a habitual

Instead ofमैंने रोज़ पढ़ता था।

For this meaningमैं रोज़ पढ़ता था।

This habitual construction has ordinary subject agreement.

Keep feminine plural auxiliary agreement

Instead ofवे महिलाएँ पढ़ रही थी।

For this meaningवे महिलाएँ पढ़ रही थीं।

The plural subject requires थीं.

Do not let the object control the habitual

Instead ofअमन किताब पढ़ती थी।

For this meaningअमन किताब पढ़ता था।

The subject, not the feminine book, controls this construction.

Keep the time frame

Instead ofमैं उस समय सो रही हूँ।

For this meaningमैं उस समय सो रही थी।

For the intended past scene, the auxiliary must be past.

From understanding to using

Make your own example.

Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.

Your turn 1

As a woman, describe a former habit of reading every evening and then what you were doing at eight yesterday.

Compare with a model

मैं रोज़ शाम को पढ़ती थी। कल आठ बजे मैं लिख रही थी।

I used to read every evening. At eight yesterday, I was writing.

The first sentence describes a repeated pattern; the second describes an activity inside a past scene.

  • Did you give each sentence a suitable time frame?
  • Did both constructions retain feminine agreement?

Your turn 2

As a man, say that you were reading when Reena came. Then deny that you were sleeping.

Compare with a model

जब रीना आई, मैं पढ़ रहा था। मैं सो नहीं रहा था।

When Reena came, I was reading. I was not sleeping.

The completed arrival and ongoing reading have different aspect forms. The negative keeps the past auxiliary.

  • Did each clause identify its own subject?
  • Did you keep था in the negative?
