Hindi likes and preferences with pasand

Beginner to intermediate

A useful Hindi pattern for liking is मुझे चाय पसंद है, I like tea. The person who likes something takes a ko form such as मुझे; the thing liked determines singular or plural agreement. Liking a thing does not say that you want it now, need it, or already possess it.

Start from what is pleasing to someone

English places I before like, but the common Hindi pattern organizes the message differently. Think of the liked thing as pleasing to a person. This is a learning aid for the construction, not a demand to translate every Hindi sentence word for word into unnatural English.

In मुझे चाय पसंद है, the speaker is the experiencer, and tea is what they like. The construction reports a preference; it does not ask someone to bring tea. If you are ordering, you may need a request or statement of need instead. The situation determines which message is useful.

A preference can concern a category in general or one particular item in front of you. I like tea is broad, while I like this tea evaluates a specific cup or variety. The demonstrative adds that reference without changing the basic experiencer construction. A listener who hears that you like one particular song should not assume you enjoy every song in the same style. When using the pattern in conversation, make the intended scope clear. This is especially useful when declining an offer politely: you can describe the current item without making a sweeping claim about an entire category.

मुझे चाय पसंद है।

I like tea.

रीना को संगीत पसंद है।

Reena likes music.

Choose the person’s ko form

Use मुझे, हमें, तुम्हें, or आपको to identify whose preference is being described. A name takes को, as in अमन को. A phrase such as the children also needs the appropriate oblique plural before the postposition.

Do not use a possessive form as a substitute for an experiencer. मेरी means my in a feminine noun phrase; it does not mean to me. If you want to say my sister likes tea, combine a possessive noun phrase with ko: the sister is the person who likes the tea, not the tea’s owner.

The experiencer may be a longer phrase, such as my younger sister or the children in this class. Identify the whole person phrase before adding ko. The possessive and adjective belong inside that phrase, while ko connects the person to the preference. Do not attach ko to the liked item simply because it is the nearest noun to the verb. A good analysis first labels the person who experiences the preference and then the thing liked. Once those roles are clear, the form of the experiencer and the auxiliary can be chosen for different grammatical reasons.

हमें यह गाना पसंद है।

We like this song.

मेरी बहन को चाय पसंद है।

My sister likes tea.

Let the liked item determine number

The word पसंद itself does not take different endings to match every liked noun. The auxiliary changes: a singular book uses है, while plural books use हैं. The number of people experiencing the preference does not force the auxiliary to be plural.

Thus we like this book can have हमें यह किताब पसंद है, despite the plural we. Conversely, I like these books has a plural auxiliary. Identify the liked thing before choosing the auxiliary. This is the central agreement decision in the present pattern.

हमें यह किताब पसंद है।

We like this book.

मुझे ये किताबें पसंद हैं।

I like these books.

Ignore the experiencer’s number when choosing the auxiliary

Build we like this book.

  1. Use हमें for the experiencers.
  2. The liked item is singular यह किताब.
  3. Choose है, even though the experiencer is a group.

हमें यह किताब पसंद है।

Use an infinitive when you like an activity

An activity can occupy the position of the liked thing: पढ़ना, reading, or तैरना, swimming. With a single activity expression, the common pattern uses singular है. Keep the infinitive rather than replacing it with a habitual verb form.

Compare liking to read with reading every day. The first describes a preference; the second describes a routine. A person may enjoy swimming without swimming often. When the distinction matters, say both in separate clauses instead of treating a preference as evidence of a habit.

An activity expression may include its own object or time phrase. Liking to read in the morning names a fuller activity than simply liking books. The object inside that activity is not automatically the direct controller of the outer auxiliary. Begin with a clear single infinitive activity and treat the whole expression as what is liked. This prevents the mistaken conclusion that any plural noun somewhere in the sentence requires plural hain at the end. The examples keep the activity simple, but the same analysis helps you understand why a longer phrase still functions as one activity description.

मुझे तैरना पसंद है।

I like swimming.

उसे सुबह पढ़ना पसंद है।

He or she likes reading in the morning.

Distinguish liking, wanting and needing

पसंद है describes a preference. A form of चाहना expresses wanting and usually uses ordinary subject agreement, as in मैं चाय पीना चाहती हूँ. With a noun, चाहिए expresses something needed or wanted in the current situation. None of these automatically means possession.

A guest can like coffee but want water now. Keep the current request separate from the general preference. You can also use अच्छा लगना to say something seems or feels good to someone. That expression introduces its own adjective and verb agreement, so do not swap only one word into the pasand pattern.

मुझे कॉफ़ी पसंद है, लेकिन अभी पानी चाहिए।

I like coffee, but I need water now.

मुझे यह गाना अच्छा लगता है।

I like this song; it sounds or feels good to me.

Make a negative or a past preference clear

पसंद नहीं है says the person does not like the singular item. It does not necessarily express intense dislike. नापसंद is another way to express disliking, but conversational force still depends on context. A polite response can acknowledge the offer before stating the preference.

In the past, the form of be marks gender as well as number. A feminine book gives पसंद थी; feminine plural stories give पसंद थीं. The gender of the experiencer is not the controller. A man and a woman can both use the same past form when the liked thing is unchanged.

A negative preference is useful information, but it does not explain the reason by itself. Someone might dislike this coffee because of its temperature, strength, or taste, or simply prefer another drink today. The grammar does not supply that reason. If you want to be helpful, add a specific explanation or an alternative request. In a learning exercise, distinguish the grammatical task from a social judgment about what a person ought to like. The correct answer concerns the stated meaning and construction, not whether the preference seems reasonable to the teacher or the learner.

मुझे यह कॉफ़ी पसंद नहीं है।

I do not like this coffee.

बचपन में मुझे ये कहानियाँ पसंद थीं।

In childhood, I liked these stories.

Move a preference into the past

A man liked these stories in childhood.

  1. The experiencer remains मुझे; his gender does not determine the auxiliary.
  2. The liked item कहानियाँ is feminine plural.
  3. Use the feminine plural past form थीं.
Compare your reasoning

बचपन में मुझे ये कहानियाँ पसंद थीं।

Ask about a preference without assuming an order

Use क्या पसंद है? to ask what someone likes, or a which phrase to choose among alternatives. A respectful आपको does not force respectful plural agreement on a singular liked object. If you are asking which book, use कौन सी किताब because the noun is feminine.

In the challenge, first identify the experiencer and the liked item. Then decide whether the scenario asks for a preference, a current wish, or a need. For production, make two truthful or imaginary preferences and one current request. The distinction should remain clear even without an English translation.

आपको कौन सी किताब पसंद है?

Which book do you like?

क्या आपको ये गाने पसंद हैं?

Do you like these songs?

From understanding to using

Make your own example.

Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.

Your turn 1

Say that you like these books but need a notebook now.

Compare with a model

मुझे ये किताबें पसंद हैं, लेकिन अभी एक कॉपी चाहिए।

I like these books, but I need a notebook now.

The preference uses plural agreement with books. The current need uses a separate noun plus चाहिए construction.

  • Did books control the plural auxiliary?
  • Did you distinguish liking from needing?

Your turn 2

Ask a listener respectfully which book they like. Answer as the listener that you like this one.

Compare with a model

आपको कौन सी किताब पसंद है? मुझे यह किताब पसंद है।

Which book do you like? I like this book.

The experiencer changes between question and answer, while the singular liked book keeps है.
