Italian Instructions: Familiar Commands, Negatives and Lei

Elementary to intermediate

A familiar affirmative instruction usually attaches object pronouns: aprilo, open it. A familiar singular negative uses non plus an infinitive, allowing non aprirlo or non lo aprire. Respectful Lei instructions use a different verb pattern with pronouns before it, as in lo apra.

Identify the listener before forming the instruction

An instruction addresses a listener directly, but its tone can range from an urgent warning to an invitation. The verb form depends on whether you address one familiar person, a group, or one person respectfully. The subject is normally understood, not absent from the grammar. Begin with that addressee, then decide what action the situation requires. A positive familiar instruction and a respectful request may need different endings even when English uses the same bare verb. Please can soften wording but does not determine address or erase the force of a demand. In this lesson, each practice cue supplies the intended listener so there is a clear basis for comparing the choices.

Aspetta qui, per favore.

Wait here, please, addressing one familiar person.

The familiar singular instruction uses aspetta with the listener understood.

Entrate pure.

Please come in, addressing a group.

The plural form invites more than one listener to enter.

Build regular familiar forms from their verb family

For familiar singular instructions, regular are verbs commonly use a, as in parla. Regular ere and ire verbs commonly use i, as in prendi and dormi. Verbs with the present isc pattern retain it in forms such as finisci. Plural voi forms use the familiar endings ate, ete, and ite. These patterns are not permission to turn every present form into a command unchanged. In particular, a familiar singular are command differs from the ordinary tu present indicative. Retrieve the infinitive family, select the addressee, and then check whether the verb is irregular. Practicing with a short practical instruction makes the form’s purpose easier to remember.

Parla più lentamente.

Speak more slowly, addressing one familiar person.

The regular are familiar instruction ends in a.

Finisci il lavoro.

Finish the work, addressing one familiar person.

The familiar instruction retains the isc pattern of this verb.

Recognize short irregular commands and their spelling

Frequent instructions include sii for being and abbi for having. Some verbs allow a full familiar form and a shortened form: vai or va’, fai or fa’, dai or da’, and stai or sta’. The short form of saying is di’. An apostrophe marks these shortened spellings; an accent is not a general substitute. When an object attaches to these short forms, its first consonant often doubles, as in dimmi and fallo. A following gli is an exception to that doubling pattern. Learn a small set of common attached instructions as a bridge between the spelling rule and useful speech.

Sii paziente.

Be patient, addressing one familiar person.

Being has the specialized familiar command sii.

Dimmi la verità.

Tell me the truth, addressing one familiar person.

The object attaches to short di’ with a doubled m.

Attach objects and reflexives to familiar positive commands

A positive familiar instruction attaches an unstressed object to the end of the verb and writes the result as one word. A reflexive pronoun likewise attaches while matching the listener. The person being instructed can be different from the object or recipient: in telling a friend to send you a document, the friend acts, you receive, and the document is transferred. With two objects, preserve their normal order and combining forms before attachment. Start from a command with full nouns, decide what can be recovered from context, and then shorten only those roles. Pronouns make instructions concise, but they cannot identify an object that the listener has never been given a reason to recognize.

Leggila ad alta voce.

Read it aloud, addressing one familiar person and referring to a feminine letter.

The feminine object attaches to the familiar affirmative command.

Alzatevi, per favore.

Please get up, addressing a group.

The plural instruction takes the matching reflexive pronoun attached at the end.

Use an infinitive for familiar singular prohibitions

For a familiar singular negative command, use non plus an infinitive. An object can stand before that infinitive after non, or attach at its end. Both non lo toccare and non toccarlo are standard ways to say do not touch it. The attached version drops the infinitive’s final e. Do not mark one of these alternatives wrong merely because you learned the other first. This singular negative differs from plural instructions, which retain a plural command form. When revising, check the listener’s number before applying the infinitive rule. A prohibition still has a particular addressee and object, so keep those roles clear while changing the verb construction.

The two legitimate negative placements are a useful self check. Produce both from the same full instruction and confirm that the listener and object remain unchanged. If one version accidentally repeats the object or changes the reflexive person, the problem is in the construction rather than the intended prohibition. Saying the forms aloud can help you keep the short pronoun group together.

Non toccarlo.

Do not touch it, addressing one familiar person and referring to a masculine object.

The negative familiar singular uses an infinitive with an attached object.

Non vi alzate ancora.

Do not get up yet, addressing a group.

The plural negative retains its plural verb and can place the reflexive before it.

Negate a familiar instruction

Turn Aprilo into a prohibition and give both legitimate placements.

  1. Familiar singular negative instructions use an infinitive.
  2. The object can precede that infinitive after non.
  3. It can also attach, with final e removed.

Non lo aprire. Non aprirlo.

Use the respectful pattern with preceding pronouns

Instructions to a person addressed as Lei use a present subjunctive form, often called an exhortative subjunctive. The unstressed pronoun precedes it even in a positive request. Compare familiar guardalo with respectful lo guardi. These forms address the same action through different constructions, so transferring familiar attachment into every polite request produces an error. A respectful form is grammatically third person singular regardless of whether the listener is a man or a woman. An adjective describing that listener can still reflect the appropriate gender and number. In practice, explicitly name the address system before selecting the form, particularly when a sentence contains both a listener and another person as its object.

Lo apra, per favore.

Please open it, addressing one person respectfully and referring to a masculine package.

The respectful instruction uses a subjunctive form with the object before it.

Si accomodi.

Please take a seat, addressing one person respectfully.

The reflexive pronoun precedes the respectful instruction.

Change address and placement together

Ask a stranger respectfully to read a known feminine letter.

  1. Choose respectful singular agreement.
  2. Use the present subjunctive instruction legga.
  3. Place the feminine object before the verb.
Compare your reasoning

La legga, per favore.

Choose an invitation or modal question when it fits

A shared invitation such as andiamo includes the speaker in the proposed action. A modal question such as puoi aspettare? asks about the listener’s ability or willingness instead of directly issuing an imperative. A conditional question can soften the request further, but context still determines its effect. These alternatives are useful when the action is a favor rather than a necessary instruction. Keep the grammar of each frame intact: a modal takes an infinitive, while the shared invitation has its own finite form. During practice, write the situation first. Then choose a direct instruction, prohibition, shared proposal, or question whose literal meaning matches the outcome you want.

Andiamo a casa.

Let’s go home, including the speaker in the invitation.

The first person plural proposal includes both speaker and companions.

Puoi aspettare un momento?

Can you wait a moment, asking one familiar person through a modal question?

The modal carries the person ending and the requested action remains infinitive.
