Italian Comparisons: Più, Di, Che, Migliore and Meglio

Elementary to intermediate

Use più or meno to compare degree. A second person or thing often follows di, while two qualities of the same thing commonly use che. Migliore describes a better noun and agrees in number; meglio evaluates an action or functions in other adverbial patterns without noun agreement.

Name the quality and the comparison target

A useful comparison identifies both the quality and what it is compared with. Questa stanza è più luminosa dell’altra compares two rooms for brightness. It does not claim that either room is bright enough for every purpose. The words più and meno express degree, while the adjective still agrees with the noun it describes. Begin by naming the decision: you may want a quieter room, a cheaper ticket, or a clearer explanation. Then choose a quality that actually answers that need. If the comparison target is obvious, it can remain unspoken, but it must still be recoverable. Grammatical correctness cannot compensate for comparing options on an irrelevant criterion.

Questa stanza è più luminosa dell’altra.

This room is brighter than the other one.

The adjective remains feminine singular, while the comparison target follows the contracted preposition.

Questi biglietti sono meno costosi.

These tickets are less expensive.

The adjective describes plural masculine tickets, so it takes plural agreement.

Use di for an ordinary second person or thing

When a comparison sets one person or thing against another, the second term commonly follows di. Before a stressed personal pronoun, use the form appropriate after a preposition, such as di me or di te. Before a noun with an article, di combines with that article where required. The target’s grammatical gender does not control the adjective describing the first item. A feminine room can be larger than a masculine office without changing its own adjective to masculine. Read the first noun and adjective together before checking the second term. This separates agreement within a description from the prepositional relationship that introduces the comparison.

Luca è più alto di me.

Luca is taller than I am.

The comparison uses di followed by stressed me, not a subject form.

La cucina è più grande del bagno.

The kitchen is bigger than the bathroom.

The second term combines di with the masculine article of bathroom.

Use che when comparing two qualities or actions

A different structure compares two qualities of the same person or thing. Calling a room more practical than elegant contrasts two descriptions of that room, so che is the useful connector. Comparisons between infinitive actions or between parallel prepositional phrases also commonly use che. The distinction is structural: count what is being compared, not how many nouns appear anywhere in the sentence. English than does not reveal this contrast directly. Restore the two parallel pieces and inspect whether they are people or things, qualities, actions, or prepositional phrases. The introductory examples use clear parallel structures; more complex clauses can require additional comparative expressions rather than a mechanical choice between only two words.

La stanza è più pratica che elegante.

The room is more practical than elegant.

Two qualities of the same room are compared, so che connects them.

È più facile leggere che scrivere.

Reading is easier than writing.

The comparison sets two infinitive actions in parallel.

Identify the two things being compared

Describe one room as more practical than elegant.

  1. There is one room and two qualities.
  2. Use più before the first adjective.
  3. Connect the second quality with che and keep feminine agreement.

La stanza è più pratica che elegante.

Express equality with come or quanto

Equality of a quality can be expressed with come or quanto before the comparison target. The adjective still agrees with the person or thing described. Optional first markers such as così or tanto can appear in fuller patterns, but a concise sentence does not always need them. Saying that two rooms are equally quiet compares only quietness, not size, price, or every other property. In practice, make the quality explicit and compare like with like. A choice question should not reject come simply because its model uses quanto, since both can be legitimate in the ordinary adjective pattern. The tasks instead test agreement and the stated reference.

Questa camera è tranquilla quanto l’altra.

This room is as quiet as the other one.

The equality comparison retains a feminine adjective and uses quanto for the second term.

Le mie scarpe sono comode come le tue.

My shoes are as comfortable as yours.

The adjective and the understood comparison noun remain feminine plural.

Let migliore and peggiore describe nouns

The comparative adjectives migliore and peggiore express better and worse. Their singular form does not distinguish masculine from feminine, while the plural forms are migliori and peggiori. They do not ordinarily take another più in the same simple comparative meaning. A better explanation can also be described through a specific quality, such as clearer, which tells the listener why it is better. Avoid assuming that an irregular comparative makes every decision objective. The grammar expresses your evaluation; evidence and context support it. Identify the noun being evaluated, check its number, and choose the comparative adjective that preserves both the meaning and the agreement.

Queste sono soluzioni migliori.

These are better solutions.

The comparative adjective takes plural agreement without a separate feminine ending.

Questo è un risultato peggiore.

This is a worse result.

The singular comparative adjective describes the singular result.

Use meglio and peggio for how an action goes

When you evaluate how someone performs an action, the adverbial forms meglio and peggio are useful. They do not take plural or feminine endings because they do not agree with a noun in that role. Contrast better explanations with explaining better: the first evaluates things and the second evaluates an activity. Italian also uses è meglio to evaluate a proposition or course of action, such as saying it is better to wait. That does not license substituting the adverb before every noun. Identify what is being evaluated before translating English better. The distinction often becomes clear when you can point to either a noun phrase or a verb phrase as the target.

Try expanding the English message before choosing its Italian form. Better solutions means solutions that are better; working better means doing the activity in a better way. The expansion exposes the noun or action being evaluated. Once that role is clear, check number only where the selected Italian form actually allows agreement. This gives you a reusable diagnostic for new vocabulary.

Adesso spiego meglio.

Now I explain better.

The adverb evaluates explaining and does not agree with the speaker.

È meglio aspettare.

It is better to wait.

The evaluation concerns the infinitive action as a whole.

Choose better from its grammatical job

Say you have better explanations and that you now explain better.

  1. Explanations are plural nouns, so use an agreeing adjective.
  2. Explaining is an action, so use an adverb.
  3. Do not add another comparative marker to either form.
Compare your reasoning

Ho spiegazioni migliori. Adesso spiego meglio.

Separate the best in a set from very good

A relative superlative identifies an extreme within a comparison set: the quietest room in the hotel or the least expensive tickets on the list. An article and an expressed or recoverable set make that relationship clear. An absolute superlative such as tranquillissimo expresses a very high degree without identifying a winner among a set. It still agrees with its noun. A very quiet room is not necessarily the quietest available room. Keep that practical difference visible when making recommendations. First state the criterion and set, then choose whether your message ranks one option or merely describes its intensity. The forms serve different communicative purposes even when both sound strongly positive.

È la camera più tranquilla dell’albergo.

It is the quietest room in the hotel.

The article and comparison set identify a relative superlative.

Le camere sono tranquillissime.

The rooms are very quiet, without ranking them against a set.

The absolute superlative agrees with feminine plural rooms.

Common mistakes

Check the construction

Instead ofQuesta stanza è più luminoso dell’altra.

For this meaningQuesta stanza è più luminosa dell’altra.

The comparison does not remove the adjective’s agreement with the feminine room. The adjective remains feminine singular, while the comparison target follows the contracted preposition.

Preserve the intended meaning

Instead ofLe mie scarpe sono comodo come le tue.

For this meaningLe mie scarpe sono comode come le tue.

The invariable looking adjective does not match the plural shoes. The adjective and the understood comparison noun remain feminine plural.

Place each element carefully

Instead ofAdesso spiego migliori.

For this meaningAdesso spiego meglio.

A plural comparative adjective cannot fill this adverbial role. The adverb evaluates explaining and does not agree with the speaker.
