Join two statements around a shared reference
A relative clause adds information about an earlier noun or pronoun. Start with two complete statements that share a participant, such as knowing a neighbor and that neighbor working nearby. The combined sentence uses the shared noun once and represents its role inside the added clause with a relative expression. Italian che can refer to a person or thing, so English who versus which does not directly determine the Italian form. Keep the main statement visible while adding the description. A longer sentence still needs its own main verb outside the relative clause. Restoring the original pair of statements is a reliable way to check whether the new clause says what you intended.
Conosco una vicina che lavora qui.
I know a female neighbor who works here.
The neighbor becomes the subject of the added description, represented by che.
Questo è il negozio che cerco.
This is the store that I am looking for.
The store is the direct object of searching inside the relative clause.
Let a relative subject control its own verb
When the relative expression is the subject of the added clause, the antecedent supplies the relevant number and person. Plural neighbors therefore require a plural verb in their description, even if another singular noun appears nearby. The main clause has its own agreement relationship. In a sentence describing neighbors who work nearby and then saying they are kind, both verbs are plural for related but distinct reasons. Read the main sentence without the relative clause, then restore the added description and check its verb independently. This two pass method helps when a relative clause separates the main subject from its verb. The relative word che itself does not change spelling for gender or number.
I vicini che lavorano qui sono gentili.
The neighbors who work here are kind.
The plural neighbors control the relative verb and the main plural description.
La porta che dà sul cortile è aperta.
The door that opens onto the courtyard is open.
The singular door is the subject of the relative verb and the main description.
Keep the connector when the relative is an object
English can omit an object relative in a phrase such as the book I read. Ordinary Italian keeps che in the corresponding construction. The relative clause also has its own subject, which can be unspoken when the verb ending makes it recoverable. Do not add a second direct object pronoun that duplicates the role already represented by che in the neutral standard pattern taught here. Relative clauses in actual informal speech can contain resumptive structures, but that does not make duplication the target for a first written model. To check the role, restore the original statement: I read the book. The book is read, while I is the subject of reading.
Il documento che leggo è importante.
The document I am reading is important.
The document is the object represented by che; the first person verb identifies the reader.
La lettera che ho scritto è sul tavolo.
The letter I wrote is on the table.
The letter already fills the relative object role, while the compound has an understood first person subject.
Preserve the verb’s preposition with cui
For an indirect relationship, keep the preposition required by the original construction and use cui. Speaking about a topic uses di cui; working with a colleague uses con cui; referring to something uses a cui. The preposition belongs to the meaning of the relationship, so it cannot simply disappear because the noun moved earlier. In the recipient relation, bare cui can also occur without a, but that limited option does not allow dropping every preposition. Learn the complete verb and complement pattern first. English may leave a preposition at the end of a relative clause, whereas these Italian examples place it before the relative expression.
Il progetto di cui parliamo è utile.
The project we are talking about is useful.
The topic relation retains di before the relative form.
La collega con cui lavoro abita qui.
The female colleague I work with lives here.
The with relation is expressed by con cui inside the description.
Rebuild the full prepositional relation
Combine I know the colleague and I work with the colleague.
- The main clause identifies the colleague.
- The original second clause has a with relation.
- Keep con before cui rather than at the end.
Conosco la collega con cui lavoro.
Use place and time relatives with clear scope
A place can be described with in cui or, where the relation is genuinely locative, dove. The choice should preserve what the original full sentence means. A building where someone works has a place relation; a building someone photographs is a direct object and can simply take che. Time nouns can use patterns such as il giorno in cui. Avoid treating every English where as permission to use dove with any abstract or temporal antecedent in careful writing. Restore the original location or time phrase and select a relative construction from that relation. This is especially useful when one noun could participate in several different descriptions.
Il quartiere in cui abito è tranquillo.
The neighborhood where I live is quiet.
The residence relation is locative and can use in cui.
Ricordo il giorno in cui siamo arrivati.
I remember the day when we arrived.
The time expression is represented by in cui in the careful written pattern.
Make the possessive article agree with what is possessed
The pattern article plus cui can express whose. The article agrees with the following possessed noun, not with the earlier owner. In a description of a woman whose son lives nearby, masculine singular son requires il cui figlio. In a description of a man whose daughters study nearby, feminine plural daughters require le cui figlie. The owner and the possessed people are different grammatical roles even when all are human. Identify them explicitly before selecting the article. Do not insert a second ordinary article between cui and the possessed noun in this basic pattern. The entire possessed noun phrase then performs its normal role inside the relative clause.
La donna il cui figlio studia qui è mia vicina.
The woman whose son studies here is my neighbor.
The article reflects masculine singular son rather than the woman’s gender.
L’uomo le cui figlie lavorano qui è arrivato.
The man whose daughters work here has arrived.
The feminine plural possessed noun selects le cui and a plural relative verb.
Choose a possessive article
Describe a woman whose two sons study here.
- The woman is the owner, not the noun controlling the relative article.
- Sons is masculine plural.
- Use i cui figli and a plural verb.
Compare your reasoning
La donna i cui figli studiano qui.
Distinguish unnamed content and extra information
An expression such as quello che dici can refer to what someone says without naming a specific object category. The whole expression represents content, while che fills a role inside its clause. It is not formed by dropping the connector. Punctuation also affects how descriptions are understood: a restrictive relative identifies which people or things you mean, while a parenthetical relative adds information about an already identified referent and is normally set off with commas. Do not add or remove those commas without reading the intended message. Finally, recognize that relative structures can become more complex with mood or formal il quale patterns. The present lesson establishes role and reference before extending to those choices.
Capisco quello che dici.
I understand what you are saying.
The expression refers to the content said, and keeps the relative connector.
Marta, che abita qui, conosce il quartiere.
Marta, who lives here, knows the neighborhood, adding information about an identified person.
The commas mark an added description rather than selecting one Marta from a stated set.
Notice the difference
Common mistakes
Check the construction
Instead ofConosco una vicina lavora qui.
For this meaningConosco una vicina che lavora qui.
The ordinary finite relative needs its connector. The neighbor becomes the subject of the added description, represented by che.
Preserve the intended meaning
Instead ofLa collega cui lavoro con abita qui.
For this meaningLa collega con cui lavoro abita qui.
This copies a stranded English preposition instead of the Italian relative pattern. The with relation is expressed by con cui inside the description.
Place each element carefully
Instead ofLa donna la cui figlio studia qui è mia vicina.
For this meaningLa donna il cui figlio studia qui è mia vicina.
The article incorrectly follows the owner instead of the possessed noun. The article reflects masculine singular son rather than the woman’s gender.
From understanding to using
Make your own example.
Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.
Your turn 1
Say you know a neighbor who works nearby and identify the store where she works.
Compare with a model
Conosco una vicina che lavora qui vicino. Questo è il negozio in cui lavora.
I know a female neighbor who works nearby. This is the store where she works.
The first relative has a subject role; the second expresses a location.
- Which relative needs a preposition?
- Does each verb keep the intended subject?
Your turn 2
Say that you understand what your friend says, then identify the topic you are talking about.
Compare with a model
Capisco quello che dici. Questo è il tema di cui parliamo.
I understand what you say. This is the topic we are talking about.
Unnamed content uses a content expression, while the topic relation preserves di.
- Did both clauses retain their connector?
- Did the topic relative preserve its preposition?
