Request a thing or request an action
At a counter, 물 주세요 asks for water. 물을 마셔 주세요 asks the listener to drink water for someone’s benefit. These are different requests even though both contain water and juseyo. The action verb changes who is expected to do what. Do not add a familiar drinking verb if you only want the item supplied.
A noun request may include the object particle: 물을 주세요. In ordinary short service requests, the particle can be omitted when the relationship is clear. Learn the complete form first so that natural omission does not hide the structure. The requested object remains the thing to be supplied, not the person doing the giving.
For an action request, identify the actor as the listener and name the relevant object or recipient. Asking a colleague to send a file requires the sending action, the file, and sometimes the destination. A correct polite ending is only one part of a clear request. The person still needs enough information to carry out the task.
물 한 잔 주세요.
Please give me a glass of water.
The quantity makes the requested item specific.
이 문장을 읽어 주세요.
Please read this sentence for me.
The action verb asks the listener to read, rather than supply an object.
Build the a or eo form before juseyo
The action verb takes its a or eo connecting form before 주세요. 읽다 gives 읽어 주세요; 보다 gives 봐 주세요; 하다 gives 해 주세요. Do not attach juseyo to the dictionary ending 다. The form before the auxiliary is the same kind of vowel form seen in several other Korean constructions.
A useful method is to recall the ordinary polite form and remove only final 요: 읽어요 helps you recover 읽어. This is a learning aid for these examples, not a universal instruction to strip endings from any Korean expression. Check irregular vocabulary and constructions separately rather than using a mechanical shortcut outside its scope.
The main action and the auxiliary are written as separate words in the models: 읽어 주세요. Learn that spacing along with the form. The sentence should also retain the object that the verb needs. If the listener has not seen the page or file, a pointing word may not be enough; use a specific noun or show the intended item.
사진을 봐 주세요.
Please look at the photograph for me.
Boda contracts to bwa before the request auxiliary.
다시 설명해 주세요.
Please explain it again.
Hada becomes hae before juseyo.
Ask for a helpful explanation
Ask a classmate to explain again.
- Choose 설명하다 as the action.
- Use its connecting form 설명해.
- Add 다시 and the request auxiliary.
다시 설명해 주세요.

Preserve useful irregular and eu stem forms
The request for writing uses 써 주세요, from 쓰다. The final eu vowel changes before the connecting ending. A request for help uses 도와주세요 or the spaced model 도와 주세요, from irregular 돕다. Do not generalize the spelling of one common phrase to every b stem.
Rieul stems behave according to the ending that follows. In 열어 주세요, from 열다, the rieul remains before the vowel form. In a direct 여세요 instruction, it is dropped before the honorific si element. The difference is not random politeness spelling; the two constructions attach different material to the stem.
These pairs are worth producing slowly at first because both alternatives can be familiar from real conversations. Name the construction before forming the word: a request for a helpful action with juseyo, or a direct seyo instruction. Once the target is clear, the correct stem behavior becomes easier to retrieve. Do not combine pieces from both forms into an invented hybrid.
여기에 이름을 써 주세요.
Please write your name here.
The eu stem gives sseo before juseyo.
문을 열어 주세요.
Please open the door for me.
The rieul remains in yeoreo before the auxiliary.
Distinguish a helpful request from an instruction
A form such as 읽으세요 can tell or invite someone to read. 읽어 주세요 frames the action as something requested for someone’s benefit. Both can be polite in form, but their conversational purposes are not identical. A teacher directing a class and a learner asking a friend for assistance may choose different wording.
For seyo, a consonant stem commonly uses 으세요, while a vowel stem uses 세요. Rieul stems lose the rieul before this ending. The form also appears in respectful statements or questions in appropriate contexts, so do not assume every visible seyo sequence must be a command. Sentence context and intonation help identify the speech act.
Neither construction guarantees that a request is reasonable. Consider the burden, the listener’s role, and whether the task is clear. This lesson does not teach an exhaustive hierarchy of formal requests. It gives two common patterns and the practical distinction needed to avoid treating them as interchangeable versions of an English please word.
여기에 앉으세요.
Please sit here.
This directs or invites the listener to take a seat.
잠깐 기다려 주세요.
Please wait a moment for me.
The requested waiting is framed as a favor in this exchange.

Make a negative request with ji maseyo
To ask someone not to do something, use the stem plus 지 마세요. 사진을 찍지 마세요 asks the listener not to take photographs. The ordinary negative statement 사진을 안 찍어요 reports that someone does not take photographs; it does not automatically direct the listener to stop.
The prohibition pattern uses 말다, whose form changes in the polite request. Learn 하지 마세요 as a complete negative instruction. Do not attach 안 in front of an affirmative juseyo request and assume you have built the same meaning. Negating an action statement and requesting that an action not occur are different grammatical and communicative operations.
The scenario supplies the rule or practical reason. In a fictional classroom, a teacher may request that learners not open a book during a memory exercise. That example teaches the form without claiming a real place’s policy. When interpreting a negative request, preserve any limiting time or location so that you do not turn a local instruction into an unlimited prohibition.
지금 책을 보지 마세요.
Please do not look at the book now.
The time word limits the instruction to the current activity.
여기에서 사진을 찍지 마세요.
Please do not take photographs here.
The place phrase limits where the negative request applies.
Change a report into restraint
Ask someone not to take a photo here.
- Choose the action 사진을 찍다.
- Attach 지 마세요 to the stem.
- Keep the action location explicit.
Compare your reasoning
여기에서 사진을 찍지 마세요.
Add enough detail to make the favor workable
A clear request can specify the object, recipient, place, or manner. 친구에게 사진을 보내 주세요 asks for sending a photograph to a friend. The recipient particle is different from the object particle. Keep those roles stable when changing a statement into a request; the auxiliary does not reorganize who receives the photograph.
For a communication repair, 천천히 말해 주세요 asks for slower speech, while 다시 말해 주세요 asks for repetition. These are related but distinct needs. A repeated sentence at the same speed may not solve a speed problem. Choose the detail that explains what would make the message understandable.
A brief thanks can acknowledge the completed help. The construction used in thanks such as 설명해 주셔서 감사합니다 combines the helpful action with an honorific and a reason connection. It is useful to recognize as a whole expression here. Full production of all its internal endings belongs with the honorific and reasons lessons.
천천히 말해 주세요.
Please speak slowly.
The manner word identifies the specific communication help needed.
친구에게 사진을 보내 주세요.
Please send the photograph to my friend.
The recipient and transferred object keep their distinct particles.

Acknowledge, clarify, and retrieve the pattern
After hearing a request, a short 네, 알겠습니다 acknowledges understanding in a polite setting. If you did not understand, request the missing information instead of automatically agreeing. A successful exchange includes both a clear action request and a response that accurately reflects the listener’s understanding.
In the game, first identify whether the prompt asks for a thing, a helpful action, a direct instruction, or restraint. Then choose the verb form and any necessary detail. The wrong options may be grammatical but assign a different task. Explain that difference before moving on, especially when the same object appears in both options.
For production, imagine a real classroom or service interaction and request one specific action. Then write the corresponding ordinary statement and explain what changed. On a later day, retrieve a regular form and one irregular form without looking at the examples. The goal is a request someone can carry out, not simply attaching juseyo to the last Korean word you remember.
네, 알겠습니다.
Yes, I understand.
This acknowledges the instruction in the stated polite context.
다시 설명해 주세요.
Please explain it again.
This asks for clarification instead of implying that understanding is complete.
