Korean descriptive verbs and adjective forms

Beginner to lower intermediate

Many Korean words translated as English adjectives are complete descriptive predicates. 커요 means is big, without an additional 이에요. Their endings change for politeness, negation, connection, and noun modification. Learn the predicate’s dictionary form and its class rather than inserting the English verb be into every description.

Let a descriptive predicate finish the sentence

The dictionary form 크다 describes being big. In ordinary polite conversation it becomes 커요. A sentence such as 방이 커요 is complete: the room is big. English uses is, but Korean does not add a noun copula after this descriptive verb. 방이에요, by contrast, identifies something as a room. Description and identification use different structures.

The contrast is easier to see if the subject stays constant. You can identify an object as a bag with 가방이에요, then describe the bag with 커요. Each utterance answers a different question. Is it a bag asks about identity; is it big asks about a property. Do not take the English presence of be as evidence that both must contain the same Korean ending.

A dictionary form is useful for looking up vocabulary, but it is not automatically the polite form to say to a stranger. Record a new descriptive word with one complete polite example. That example shows both meaning and sentence behavior. Later transformations can build on the known stem instead of relying on a translation label alone.

방이 커요.

The room is big.

The descriptive predicate completes the sentence without an added copula.

이것은 가방이에요.

This is a bag.

This identifies a thing as a noun category rather than describing a property.

Describe without an extra copula

Say that the bag is small.

  1. Choose the descriptive predicate 작다.
  2. Build polite 작아요.
  3. Mark the bag as the subject and stop after the predicate.

가방이 작아요.

Use the vowel pattern and recognize contractions

The polite descriptive endings use the familiar 아요 and 어요 system. 작다 becomes 작아요, and 좋다 becomes 좋아요. Words with a stem vowel other than the relevant a or o class normally use the eo pattern. The written result may contract, so learn the complete pronunciation and spelling of frequent forms.

For an eu stem, the final drops before the vowel ending. 크다 becomes 커요; 바쁘다 becomes 바빠요; 예쁘다 becomes 예뻐요. In longer stems, the preceding syllable helps determine the vowel. This is a specific pattern, not permission to delete any vowel that looks inconvenient.

Compare one regular consonant stem with one eu stem while keeping the sentence purpose the same. Both can politely describe a room or a person, but their surface endings differ because of stem structure. A learner who memorizes only the English adjectives big and busy may miss this relation. Identify the dictionary stem first, then apply the known pattern and read the whole result.

가방이 작아요.

The bag is small.

The consonant stem takes the polite vowel ending.

오늘은 바빠요.

I am busy today.

The eu stem changes before the polite ending.

Learn common irregular words as contrasts

Some descriptive words with final change before a vowel ending. 춥다 becomes 추워요, and 덥다 becomes 더워요. The pattern is common among descriptive predicates, but not every stem ending in b is irregular. 좁다, narrow, has regular 좁아요. Record the class with the word instead of guessing solely from the last consonant.

Another useful family has . 빠르다 becomes 빨라요, with the additional rieul reflected in the spelling. That is different from simply deleting the eu vowel in every word. The specific lexical pattern matters. These examples are a small starter set, not a claim that all irregular Korean morphology has been covered.

Practice a paired sentence in which the situation makes the meaning clear: cold weather, hot weather, a narrow room, or a fast bus. Then change the topic while preserving the predicate. The vocabulary should remain accurate as you focus on the ending. A correct irregular form attached to an unrelated subject can still communicate the wrong description.

오늘은 추워요.

It is cold today.

Chupda belongs to the b irregular family.

이 방은 좁아요.

This room is narrow.

Jopda keeps its final b in this polite form.

Negate a description without changing its category

A straightforward short negative places before the descriptive predicate: 안 커요, is not big. A longer pattern uses the stem plus 지 않아요: 크지 않아요. Both deny the property in the stated context. Neither turns the adjective into a noun needing 아니에요.

Words ending in 하다 can be descriptive as well as action verbs. 조용하다 means be quiet and becomes 조용해요. Its longer negative 조용하지 않아요 clearly negates the description. Do not assume every hada word means an action that can be performed on command. The lexical meaning determines which constructions are appropriate.

Negating a property does not automatically assert its opposite. Not big could mean medium sized rather than small, and not quiet may describe moderate noise rather than extreme loudness. If a practical comparison requires the stronger claim, choose the appropriate positive word. This semantic distinction is useful when describing rooms, choosing objects, or reporting conditions accurately.

방이 크지 않아요.

The room is not big.

The negative denies largeness without specifying an exact size.

도서관은 조용해요.

The library is quiet.

This hada predicate describes a state.

Change the form before a noun

Before a noun, many descriptive predicates use after a consonant stem and a final after a vowel stem. 작다 gives 작은 방, a small room; 크다 gives 큰 방, a big room. The polite sentence ending 어요 does not remain inside this noun phrase.

A rieul stem loses that rieul before this modifier ending: 길다 gives 긴 길, a long road. The b irregular pattern also affects forms such as 추운 날, a cold day. Existence based descriptive words have their own familiar pattern, including 재미있는 책, an interesting book. Do not replace every modifier with the same ending.

This distinction lets you first describe a thing, then identify which thing you mean. 방이 작아요 is a full sentence; 작은 방 is a noun phrase that can become part of a larger sentence. After constructing the phrase, add the outside particle or predicate needed for its role. The internal descriptive ending and the external sentence role are separate decisions.

작은 방이 있어요.

There is a small room.

The adjective modifies room before the whole phrase enters the sentence.

재미있는 책을 읽어요.

I read an interesting book.

The existence based adjective uses inneun before its noun.

Reuse the property before a noun

Say that you bought a small bag.

  1. Change the descriptive stem to modifier 작은.
  2. Place 가방 after it.
  3. Mark the complete phrase with and add bought.
Compare your reasoning

작은 가방을 샀어요.

Connect properties and distinguish contrast

To list compatible descriptions, attach to the first descriptive stem: 크고 밝아요, is big and bright. The final predicate carries the polite ending. This is different from the noun modifying form and different from putting two full polite sentences next to each other.

For an explicit contrast, 지만 is useful: 작지만 편해요, it is small but comfortable. The connector tells the listener how to relate the two descriptions. Do not choose it merely because the English words are adjectives. Decide whether you are adding another property or presenting a property that contrasts with an expectation.

Background constructions such as 작은데 also occur, but their function depends on the following message and context. This lesson only asks you to recognize that Korean has more than one way to connect descriptions. Reliable production begins with a clear additive go sentence and an explicit jiman contrast. Later lessons can develop the broader background pattern without collapsing all connectors into English and.

방이 크고 밝아요.

The room is big and bright.

Go joins the first descriptive stem to the final polite description.

방은 작지만 편해요.

The room is small but comfortable.

Jiman marks the intended contrast between the two properties.

Check the whole description in context

A descriptive sentence still needs understandable reference. The subject or topic can be omitted when both speakers know the object, but a new description may need the noun named. At a room viewing, 밝아요 can refer to the room; in another conversation, the same word could describe something else. Recover the reference before translating.

The choice game alternates sentence predicates, noun modifiers, negatives, and connectors because each position needs a different form. Before answering, ask whether you are finishing a sentence or describing a following noun. Then identify the stem pattern. A correct vowel ending in the wrong grammatical position is still an error.

For production, describe a real object in two full sentences, then combine one property with its noun. Keep the meaning stable while changing the structure. Later, retrieve a regular form and an irregular form without the model. This gives you a practical way to review vocabulary and grammar together instead of memorizing a disconnected list of adjective translations.

이 가방은 가벼워요.

This bag is light.

The topic makes the object of the description explicit.

가벼운 가방을 샀어요.

I bought a light bag.

The descriptive modifier stays inside the object phrase.
