Explain a result with a causal seo clause
비가 와서 집에 있어요 gives rain as the reason for being at home. The first clause supplies a cause and the second supplies the related situation. The listener should not infer that the speaker performs both actions. A causal relationship can connect weather, a condition, an action, and a resulting choice.
The a or eo form appears before seo. 오다 becomes 와서, 먹다 becomes 먹어서, and 가다 becomes 가서. Because the same surface forms also appear in sequential constructions, the vocabulary and scene are essential. Learn the form and the relation together instead of assigning seo one fixed English translation.
A reason clause should explain the result actually stated. Being tired may explain resting; it does not automatically explain every possible later event. When writing examples, keep the causal relation ordinary and explicit. This makes it possible to assess both grammar and meaning without asking the learner to invent a hidden story that rescues an unclear sentence.
비가 와서 집에 있어요.
I am at home because it is raining.
The weather is the reason for the situation.
피곤해서 쉬어요.
I rest because I am tired.
The descriptive predicate supplies the reason.
Build reasons from descriptions and nouns
Descriptive predicates connect through their appropriate vowel forms: 바쁘다 gives 바빠서, and 춥다 gives 추워서. The same stem changes that appear in polite forms remain relevant. Do not treat a descriptive reason as a noun that needs an extra copula after its already complete predicate.
A noun reason uses the copula’s connecting form: 학생이라서, because someone is a student, or 휴가라서, because it is a vacation. The relevant form is 이라서 after a consonant ending noun and 라서 after a vowel ending noun. This differs from adding seo directly to an ordinary noun.
Keep identity and description distinct. Saying a place is a school identifies it; saying it is quiet describes a property. Both can explain another situation, but they build their reason clauses differently. Start from a correct independent predicate, identify its category, and then choose the corresponding connecting form. This reduces errors caused by the English word is appearing in both translations.
날씨가 추워서 집에 있어요.
I am at home because the weather is cold.
The b irregular descriptive predicate becomes chuwoseo.
학생이라서 매일 공부해요.
I study every day because I am a student.
The noun reason uses iraseo after a consonant.
Give a descriptive reason
Say that you rest because you are tired.
- Start from 피곤하다.
- Build the causal form 피곤해서.
- State the resulting action in polite form.
피곤해서 쉬어요.
Use nikka when a reason motivates a request
추우니까 문을 닫아 주세요 gives coldness as the reason for asking someone to close the door. The final clause is a request, not simply a report of what happened. The nikka construction is useful when the speaker uses a reason as the basis for an instruction, request, or proposal.
The beginner restriction concerns causal a or eo seo before these speech acts. For a clear reason plus request exercise, choose nikka. Do not claim that every sentence containing seo and an instruction is impossible, because sequential seo has a different function. The distinction belongs to the relation between clauses, not to the mere presence of a string of letters.
A grammatically formed request still needs a reasonable action and clear participants. Name the object if the listener cannot infer it. A reason can help explain why a favor is wanted, but it does not automatically make every demand appropriate. Keep the exercise focused on a familiar shared setting, such as a cold room and an open door.
추우니까 문을 닫아 주세요.
It is cold, so please close the door.
Nikka gives a reason for the request.
시간이 있으니까 같이 공부해요.
We have time, so let us study together.
The stated context makes the final polite form a proposal.
Use a reason to support a request
Ask someone to close the door because it is cold.
- Choose the coldness predicate 춥다.
- Use its nikka form 추우니까.
- Add the helpful action request.
Compare your reasoning
추우니까 문을 닫아 주세요.
Choose nikka from the stem class
After a vowel stem, use 니까: 가다 gives 가니까. After most consonant stems, use 으니까: 먹다 gives 먹으니까. A rieul stem drops its rieul before this ending, so 살다 gives 사니까. The last case differs from ryeogo and myeonseo forms that retain the rieul.
The construction also follows descriptive predicates. Irregular words require their appropriate stem behavior, as in 추우니까. Do not derive every nikka form by removing yo from an ordinary polite word. The ending starts a different morphological environment, so the dictionary stem and its class remain the more reliable starting point.
When speaking slowly for practice, separate three decisions: the lexical predicate, the stem form, and the sentence’s reason relationship. Then put the complete utterance back together. Repeating isolated endings without a reason and result may improve recall of sounds but does not show whether you can use the construction to justify an actual request or explain a situation.
서울에 사니까 지하철을 자주 타요.
I often take the subway because I live in Seoul.
The rieul in salda drops before nikka.
시간이 없으니까 빨리 가세요.
There is no time, so please go quickly.
The consonant stem takes eunikka before the instruction.
Preserve time, negation, and the actual reason
A negative predicate can supply a reason. 시간이 없어서 gives lack of time as a cause, while 가지 않으니까 uses the longer negative action predicate before nikka. The negative belongs inside the reason when it is the absence of an action or condition that explains the following message.
In basic causal seo models, time is commonly understood through the final predicate and context rather than inserting past marking before seo. Nikka can follow past marking in appropriate sentences. This introductory distinction is useful, but it should not be expanded into a claim that Korean has only one possible way to express a past cause.
For interpretation, ask what is being denied and what is being asserted. No time is different from not wanting to go. A completed purchase can be explained by a prior need, while a present condition can explain a current request. Keep the causal sequence plausible and retain explicit time expressions when translating or rewriting the sentence.
시간이 없어서 못 갔어요.
I could not go because I had no time.
The final past form places the outcome in the past.
책을 샀으니까 읽어 보세요.
You bought the book, so try reading it.
Past marking appears before nikka in the reason.
Recognize linked sequences and conventional thanks
도서관에 가서 책을 읽어요 uses seo for a linked sequence: going to the library and reading there. This is not the same relation as rain causing someone to stay home. A sequential instruction can likewise direct someone to go somewhere and perform an action. The reason restriction should not be applied to that distinct use.
Thanks and apologies often use a causal seo connection. 도와주셔서 감사합니다 thanks someone for helping. The honorific material inside the phrase respects the helper, and the helpful action supplies the reason for gratitude. It is useful to recognize the full expression before independently building every possible combination.
To classify a new sentence, identify whether the first clause supplies a cause, a preparatory action, or the act being acknowledged in a conventional expression. There may be discourse nuance beyond these first categories, but the exercise should not erase the categories altogether. A careful learner can know the useful beginner pattern while remaining open to broader uses later.
도서관에 가서 책을 읽으세요.
Go to the library and read a book there.
This uses sequential seo in an instruction.
도와주셔서 감사합니다.
Thank you for helping me.
The helpful action gives the reason for thanks.
Choose a reason that answers the listener’s need
A reason can explain an observed result or support a proposed next action. Begin with the listener’s practical question: why did this happen, or why should we do this now? That difference helps choose a suitable causal construction and a final speech act. The ending alone is not a substitute for identifying the communication goal.
Other connectors may present background or contrast instead of a direct cause. A background statement can make a request understandable without asserting exactly the same causal relation as nikka. This lesson does not rank every connector by politeness or claim a universal emotional tone. It teaches the explicit distinctions supported by the controlled examples.
For production, write one reason plus result report and one reason plus request. Use different predicates so that you must form both endings deliberately. Then classify a sequential seo sentence to show that you have retained the scope distinction. On a later day, explain your connector choice aloud before looking at the model, and check the reason’s polarity and time.
바빠서 집에서 일해요.
I work at home because I am busy.
The sentence presents a reason and a reported situation.
바쁘니까 잠깐 기다려 주세요.
I am busy, so please wait a moment.
The reason motivates a request for patience.
Notice the difference
Common mistakes
Do not attach seo directly to a noun
Instead of학생서
For this meaning학생이라서
The noun reason uses the copula connection.
Respect the rieul change before nikka
Instead of살으니까
For this meaning사니까
The rieul stem loses rieul before this ending.
Apply the eu stem change before seo
Instead of바쁘서
For this meaning바빠서
The final eu drops before the vowel ending, producing bappaseo. The clause relation still determines whether the use is causal or sequential.

- 쉬어요
- 피곤해서
Check the answer
Answer: 피곤해서
쉬어요: Resting is the resulting action in this model.
피곤해서: Tiredness explains the resting.
Question 3
Build because it is cold from 춥다.
- 추워서
- 춥어서
Check the answer
Answer: 추워서
추워서: The word has the b irregular vowel form.

추워서 문을 닫아 주세요.: The causal seo pattern is not the target before this request.
Question 6
Why does the final speech act matter?
- All final clauses have identical restrictions.
- A request or proposal uses the reason differently from a simple result report.
Check the answer
Answer: A request or proposal uses the reason differently from a simple result report.
All final clauses have identical restrictions.: This ignores the scoped causal distinction.
A request or proposal uses the reason differently from a simple result report.: The clause relationship includes the speaker’s purpose.
Question 7
Build the nikka form of 먹다.
- 먹으니까
- 먹니까
Check the answer
Answer: 먹으니까
먹으니까: The consonant stem needs eu here.
먹니까: The required linking vowel is missing.
Question 8
Build the nikka form of live, 살다.
- 살으니까
- 사니까
Check the answer
Answer: 사니까
살으니까: This incorrectly retains rieul and adds eu.
사니까: The rieul drops before this ending.
Question 9
In the lack of time model, what is the stated cause?
- 시간이 없어서
- 못 갔어요
Check the answer
Answer: 시간이 없어서
시간이 없어서: The first clause gives the missing resource.
못 갔어요: The second clause is the unsuccessful outcome.
Question 10
Can nikka follow past marking in an appropriate reason clause?
- No, past time is impossible before every connector.
- Yes, as in the purchased book model.
Check the answer
Answer: Yes, as in the purchased book model.
No, past time is impossible before every connector.: This incorrectly generalizes across connectors.
Yes, as in the purchased book model.: The construction can include that time marking.
Question 11
Does the library instruction contradict the causal seo restriction?
- No, it uses a sequential connection.
- Yes, every seo is necessarily causal.
Check the answer
Answer: No, it uses a sequential connection.
No, it uses a sequential connection.: The construction’s function must be identified.
Yes, every seo is necessarily causal.: The same form can express different relationships.
Question 12
What is acknowledged in the thanks model?
- A future trip that has not been mentioned
- The listener’s help
Check the answer
Answer: The listener’s help
A future trip that has not been mentioned: The expression does not introduce that unrelated event.
The listener’s help: The helping action is the reason for gratitude.
Question 13
Which model supplies a reason for a request?
- 바쁘니까 잠깐 기다려 주세요.
- 바빠서 집에서 일해요.

바빠서 집에서 일해요.: The final clause reports the speaker’s activity.
Question 14
What should a self check include besides the spelling of the connector?
- Only the number of syllables
- The cause, final speech act, time, and polarity
Check the answer
Answer: The cause, final speech act, time, and polarity
Only the number of syllables: Syllable count does not establish meaning.
The cause, final speech act, time, and polarity: These features determine whether the explanation says what was intended.
Keep the conversation going
What to practice next
Review connected actions for sequential seo and requests for juseyo. Tomorrow build one noun reason and one descriptive reason, then explain whether the final clause reports a result or asks for action.
