Mandarin comparisons with bi and yiyang

Beginner to lower intermediate

Use A plus plus B plus a property to say that A has more of that property than B. Use 没有 for a straightforward not as comparison and plus B plus 一样 for equality. Negating a greater than claim does not automatically prove a less than claim. Identify the two items and the property before choosing the pattern.

Place the comparison standard after bi

这个箱子比那个箱子重 says this box is heavier than that box. The first box is being described, the second is the comparison standard, and heavy is the property. Changing the order of the boxes reverses the claim. Bi does not itself mean that the following item is heavier.

The comparative predicate does not need an English style be verb before the adjective. In this basic bi pattern, the adjective directly supplies the compared property. The neutral descriptive use of hen from a first adjective lesson should not be mechanically inserted here. The comparison construction already provides its own grammatical frame.

Use a scene where the relation is known, such as two boxes whose weights are given in an exercise. The grammar does not establish a real world fact by itself. A lesson example comparing familiar objects is an invented scenario, not a claim about every object of that type. Keep the reference items specific enough to avoid accidental generalizations.

这个箱子比那个箱子重。

Zhège xiāngzi bǐ nàge xiāngzi zhòng.

This box is heavier than that box.

The item before bi has more of the stated property.

今天比昨天暖和。

Jīntiān bǐ zuótiān nuǎnhuo.

Today is warmer than yesterday.

The example compares two days in the imagined situation.

Build a weight comparison

Say this box is heavier than that box.

  1. Put this box first.
  2. Introduce the standard with .
  3. Finish with the weight property .

这个箱子比那个箱子重。

State the size of the difference

A difference can follow the adjective. 重一点儿 means a little heavier, while 重得多 means much heavier in the comparison. A numerical amount can also make the difference precise. The expression after the property measures the gap between the two items, not the total value of the first item.

Distinguish 一点儿 from 有点儿. The former can express the difference after the comparative property. The latter normally comes before an adjective and often presents a somewhat undesirable degree from the speaker’s viewpoint. A small amount of difference and a subjective complaint about a property are related ideas, but they have different structures.

If a box is two kilograms heavier, that does not mean the box weighs two kilograms in total. The listener needs a separate measurement for its absolute weight. This is a useful semantic check in any comparison exercise. A correct word order can still communicate an inaccurate quantity if the learner confuses the difference with the total.

这个箱子比那个重一点儿。

Zhège xiāngzi bǐ nàge zhòng yīdiǎnr.

This box is a little heavier than that one.

Yidianr measures a small difference.

这个箱子比那个重两公斤。

Zhège xiāngzi bǐ nàge zhòng liǎng gōngjīn.

This box is two kilograms heavier than that one.

The number measures the weight difference, not total weight.

Say that one item does not reach another’s degree

这个箱子没有那个箱子重 says this box is not as heavy as that box. In the straightforward comparison taught here, the first item falls below the second on the weight scale. This gives a clear way to express the opposite ordering from the original heavier than statement.

The meiyou comparison is a construction, not a statement that the first box does not possess another box. The adjective at the end supplies the scale on which the two are compared. Interpret the whole pattern before choosing an English translation for the familiar word meiyou.

Changing the property changes the claim. Not as heavy is not the same as not as large or not as expensive. A practical comparison should name the dimension relevant to the decision. If choosing luggage for a shelf, weight and size may both matter, but one sentence about weight does not provide both facts.

这个箱子没有那个箱子重。

Zhège xiāngzi méiyǒu nàge xiāngzi zhòng.

This box is not as heavy as that box.

The first item is lower on the stated scale.

这条路没有那条路长。

Zhè tiáo lù méiyǒu nà tiáo lù cháng.

This road is not as long as that road.

The property is length, not travel time or safety.

Do not confuse bubi with a strict reverse comparison

不比 denies that the first item exceeds the second on the stated scale. It can be used to reject a previous comparison. The first item might be equal or lower. Therefore, not heavier does not automatically mean strictly lighter. This distinction is especially clear when two items have the same measured weight.

In a dialogue, one person may assume a box is heavier and another may correct the assumption with bubi. The correction addresses the claim that was made. A meiyou comparison more directly asserts that the first item does not reach the second’s degree. Choose the form that matches the information you actually know.

The difference is logical as well as conversational. Negating greater than leaves more than one possibility, while asserting less than chooses one. Do not make a quiz depend on an unstated measurement. The scenario should tell learners whether the items are equal, lower, or simply not established as higher so that only one answer fits the requested claim.

这个不比那个重。

Zhège bù bǐ nàge zhòng.

This one is no heavier than that one.

The sentence denies greater weight without requiring strict lower weight.

这两个箱子一样重。

Zhè liǎng ge xiāngzi yīyàng zhòng.

These two boxes are equally heavy.

Equality can make a heavier than claim false.

Express equality or difference with gen yiyang

The basic equality pattern is A plus plus B plus 一样, optionally followed by the property. 这本书跟那本书一样厚 says the books are equally thick. It does not claim that they have the same author, contents, or cover. The property defines what is equal.

Without a named property, yiyang can state sameness in the aspect understood from context. That context must be recoverable. If the listener might interpret same as identical contents while you mean equal size, name the property. Precision is often more useful than a shorter sentence.

不一样 says that the compared items differ in the relevant respect. It does not itself say which one is larger, heavier, or better. A difference claim can be followed by a directional comparison if the decision needs that information. Do not translate different as a fixed greater than relation.

这本书跟那本书一样厚。

Zhè běn shū gēn nà běn shū yīyàng hòu.

This book is as thick as that book.

Equality concerns thickness.

我的笔跟你的不一样。

Wǒ de bǐ gēn nǐ de bù yīyàng.

My pen is different from yours.

The understood pen noun is omitted after yours.

Limit equality to one property

Say this book is as thick as that book.

  1. Name the two books with their classifiers.
  2. Connect them with and 一样.
  3. Specify thickness with .
Compare your reasoning

这本书跟那本书一样厚。

Compare how an action is performed

A manner complement with de describes how an action is performed. In a comparison such as 她比我跑得快, the two people are compared in running speed. The action remains explicit. This is more precise than comparing the people with a broad adjective unrelated to the task.

Keep performance distinct from possibility. Running faster on a stated occasion and being able to run a route are different claims. A potential complement concerns whether a result can be achieved, while a manner complement evaluates the performance. Their surface forms can resemble one another, so use the scene and full construction to interpret them.

An object may require a repeated verb or a topic style structure in a de manner sentence. For initial comparison practice, start with a simple action such as running, then expand only when the verb’s object needs to be named. The basic comparison should remain understandable before additional phrase layers are added.

她比我跑得快。

Tā bǐ wǒ pǎo de kuài.

She runs faster than I do.

The comparison is about the manner of running.

他说中文说得比我清楚。

Tā shuō Zhōngwén shuō de bǐ wǒ qīngchu.

He speaks Chinese more clearly than I do.

The repeated verb supports the object and manner complement.

Ask a comparison question that resolves a decision

A ma question can ask whether a particular comparison is true. A question word can ask which item has the greater degree. The question should name the property relevant to the decision, such as which bag is lighter or which route is shorter. Do not silently switch from one property to another in the answer.

A useful answer may need both a relative comparison and an absolute fact. A bag can be lighter than another while still being too heavy for the speaker’s purpose. Comparative grammar gives an ordering, not an automatic judgment of suitability. Add a separate description if that practical limit matters.

For production, make one greater than comparison, one not as comparison, and one equality statement from a small invented set of measurements. Explain why bubi cannot be substituted for every strict lower comparison. Retrieve the patterns later and check item order, property, and the meaning of any difference quantity.

哪个箱子更轻?

Nǎge xiāngzi gèng qīng?

Which box is lighter?

The question asks for the item with the lower weight.

这条路比那条路短吗?

Zhè tiáo lù bǐ nà tiáo lù duǎn ma?

Is this road shorter than that road?

Ma asks whether the stated comparison is true.

Common mistakes

Do not insert shi in the basic adjective comparison

Instead of这个比那个是重。

For this meaning这个比那个重。

The adjective directly supplies the property in the bi frame.

Keep the difference after the property

Instead of这个比那个一点儿重。
