Present an event as part of someone’s experience
我去过成都 reports that a visit to Chengdu belongs to the speaker’s prior experience. The sentence does not need to say when the visit occurred. The relevant question is whether the experience has happened, rather than narrating every step of one particular trip.
The verb is followed by guo, usually pronounced with a neutral tone in this aspect use. The same written character has other lexical uses, so identify the construction instead of assigning one pronunciation and meaning to every occurrence. The examples here are all experiential uses after a verb.
An experience statement can be relevant to advice, conversation, or choosing a shared activity. However, having tried an activity once does not make the speaker an expert. Preserve the narrow claim. If the listener needs skill level, frequency, or recency, supply that information separately rather than expecting guo to imply it.
我去过成都。
Wǒ qù guo Chéngdū.
I have been to Chengdu.
The sentence reports previous experience without dating the visit.
她做过面包。
Tā zuò guo miànbāo.
She has made bread before.
The experience does not itself establish professional baking skill.
Keep ordinary verb and object relationships
The basic event structure remains recognizable: subject, verb plus guo, and object. 我吃过这种面条 says the speaker has eaten this kind of noodles. The object tells the listener which experience is being discussed. A more general object makes a broader claim, so choose the level of specificity deliberately.
A location or recipient phrase retains its own role. Saying you have read in a library is different from saying you have read a particular book. A destination after a movement verb is not an object being consumed or read. The experience particle does not turn every nearby noun into the same grammatical participant.
Classifier phrases can identify a type or particular item when needed. Do not insert a quantity automatically if the question is only about whether an experience exists. Counting objects, counting occasions, and identifying a kind are separate choices. Keeping those distinctions visible prevents an apparently small noun phrase change from overstating what the speaker has tried.
我吃过这种面条。
Wǒ chī guo zhè zhǒng miàntiáo.
I have eaten this kind of noodles.
Zhong identifies the kind involved in the experience.
我在这家图书馆学习过。
Wǒ zài zhè jiā túshūguǎn xuéxí guo.
I have studied in this library before.
The library is the setting of the experienced activity.
Negate experience and preserve guo
我没去过成都 denies the experience of visiting Chengdu. Mei or meiyou appears before the verb, and guo remains after it. This differs from the ordinary negative of a verbal le event, where verbal le is omitted. Learn the two negative patterns as a contrast rather than applying one particle deletion rule everywhere.
The negative can be strengthened by an expression such as 从来没, never up to the relevant context. That still concerns the experience being discussed. It does not express a promise never to try the activity in the future. A lack of previous experience can coexist with a future wish or plan.
Choose the scope of the object carefully. Never having eaten this dish does not mean never having eaten any noodles. A useful practice correction keeps the object constant while changing only the polarity. Then explain what the negative leaves open, such as experience with other dishes or a possibility of trying this one tomorrow.
我没去过成都。
Wǒ méi qù guo Chéngdū.
I have not been to Chengdu.
The negative retains experiential guo.
我从来没吃过这种面条。
Wǒ cónglái méi chī guo zhè zhǒng miàntiáo.
I have never eaten this kind of noodles.
The denial is limited to the specified kind of noodles.
Negate a previous visit
Say you have not been to Chengdu.
- Put 没 before the movement verb.
- Keep 过 after 去.
- Name the destination after the verb phrase.
我没去过成都。
Ask an experience question and answer its actual scope
A straightforward question adds 吗 to the experience statement: 你去过成都吗? Another established pattern uses a final 没有. Both ask whether the experience belongs to the listener’s history. Keep the subject and object clear if several people or destinations have been mentioned.
A short affirmative answer can repeat the relevant verb with guo; a negative answer can use the corresponding mei pattern. The response should address the specific experience rather than only a related wish. I want to go is conversationally relevant, but it does not tell the listener whether you have already been there.
Question words remain in their information position. Asking where someone has been is different from asking whether they have visited one named place. Do not add ma to the ordinary question word pattern taught here. The experience particle and the question form combine, but neither removes the other’s normal structural requirements.
你去过成都吗?
Nǐ qù guo Chéngdū ma?
Have you been to Chengdu?
Ma forms the yes or no experience question.
你去过哪些城市?
Nǐ qù guo nǎxiē chéngshì?
Which cities have you visited?
The question phrase identifies the missing destinations.
Count experiences without confusing objects and occasions
Use an action classifier such as 次 to count occasions. 我去过成都两次 reports two visits. A city name can appear in more than one established order with the count, so do not label every alternative order wrong. The models choose one clear pattern for initial production.
Pronoun objects have a useful different ordering pattern: 我见过她一次 places the person pronoun before the action count. A count of complete passes through material may use 遍, while ordinary occurrences use ci. The unit tells the listener what is being counted, not merely that a number is present.
An experience claim with a count still does not supply dates unless you add them. Two visits could have happened recently or long ago. If a practical decision depends on current familiarity, ask or state when the relevant experience occurred. Counting alone is not a substitute for identifying the time and circumstances that matter.
我去过成都两次。
Wǒ qù guo Chéngdū liǎng cì.
I have been to Chengdu twice.
Ci counts visits.
我见过她一次。
Wǒ jiàn guo tā yī cì.
I have met her once.
The pronoun object precedes the occasion count.
Count meetings with a person
Say that you have met her once.
- Choose the experienced action 见过.
- Place the pronoun object 她 next.
- Add the count 一次.
Compare your reasoning
我见过她一次。
Separate prior experience from skill and result
做过 reports having done something, while a modal such as 会 can present a learned skill. A learner may have tried baking with assistance but not know how to bake independently. Conversely, a trained person may know how to perform a specific task without having done that exact version before.
A result complement can state what was achieved during an action. Reading a text before does not automatically mean understanding every sentence or finishing the entire work. If the result matters, name it. The experience viewpoint is one dimension of the account, while successful completion or understanding is another.
A wish with xiang is also separate. Someone who has never visited a place can still want to go. In a useful conversation, combine short statements to give both history and preference. The choice game asks for the construction that explicitly provides the requested fact, even when another option could be a reasonable follow up remark.
我做过面包,但是做得不太好。
Wǒ zuò guo miànbāo, dànshì zuò de bù tài hǎo.
I have made bread, but I did not make it very well.
Experience and quality of performance are kept separate.
我没去过成都,但是很想去。
Wǒ méi qù guo Chéngdū, dànshì hěn xiǎng qù.
I have not been to Chengdu, but I really want to go.
The lack of experience does not prevent a present wish.

Use experience inside a larger description
An experience clause can identify a noun through de, as in 我去过的城市, cities I have visited. The clause comes before the head noun. The whole phrase can then become a subject or object in another sentence. Keep the internal experience relation separate from the phrase’s role in the larger message.
A contrast with 虽然 and 但是 can relate experience to a limitation, such as having read a book but not remembering its details. Prior exposure is not the same as present recall. This makes an experience statement useful without exaggerating what it proves. Use the connection only when the second statement supplies a real contrast in the scene.
For production, write a positive experience, a negative experience, and an honest answer to a specific experience question. Then turn one of them into a noun modifier. Retrieve the set later and check the position of guo, the negative, and any count. The final explanation should say exactly what history is claimed and what skill, date, or outcome remains unstated.
这是我去过的城市。
Zhè shì wǒ qù guo de chéngshì.
This is a city I have visited.
De links the experience clause to city.
虽然我看过这本书,但是忘了很多内容。
Suīrán wǒ kàn guo zhè běn shū, dànshì wàng le hěn duō nèiróng.
Although I have read this book, I have forgotten much of its content.
Previous reading does not guarantee present recall.
