Choose the action, listener and setting together
An instruction can invite, guide, warn, or demand. Its social force comes from the situation, voice, relationship, and wording as well as its verb form. Begin by identifying who should act and what needs to happen. The standard pattern taught here addresses one person with você or several people with vocês. Brazilian conversation also uses forms associated in traditional paradigms with tu while addressing someone as você, with variation across regions and contexts. Research on Brazilian imperatives documents this mixture, so a single classroom chart cannot describe every real interaction. The exercises specify the standard pattern when a form distinction depends on it. They do not claim that another widespread conversational form is meaningless or universally wrong.
Entre, por favor.
Come in, please, addressing one person with the standard você command pattern.
The singular command invites one listener to enter.
Esperem aqui, por favor.
Wait here, please, addressing a group with standard vocês agreement.
The final m marks a plural instruction in this pattern.

Form regular singular commands from the verb family
For the standard singular você pattern, regular ar verbs use an ending in e, while regular er and ir verbs use an ending in a. The useful models are fale, coma, and abra. These forms correspond to present subjunctive forms, but you can begin with their practical use in instructions. Do not confuse the infinitive naming an action with the finite command addressed to a particular listener. Also avoid simply copying every indicative form: the standard command of speaking differs from the ordinary third person present. Some verbs need spelling adjustments to preserve pronunciation, and frequent irregular verbs have their own forms. Establish the regular family first, then check a reliable conjugation when the stem is unfamiliar.
Fale mais devagar, por favor.
Speak more slowly, please, using the standard singular você command.
The regular ar verb takes the command ending e in this pattern.
Abra a janela, por favor.
Open the window, please, using the standard singular você command.
The regular ir verb takes the singular command ending a.
Turn a regular infinitive into an instruction
Ask one person to open the window, using the standard você pattern.
- Identify abrir as an ir verb.
- Choose singular command abra.
- Keep the window as the object and add a courteous phrase if useful.
Abra a janela, por favor.
Retrieve frequent irregular commands as useful phrases
Several everyday commands use forms that are best learned as complete words. Doing or making gives faça, giving dê, going vá, coming venha, being seja, and being in a state esteja. The accent in dê and vá is part of the standard spelling. These words can support clear practical instructions, from asking someone to make a copy to inviting them to come closer. Learn the construction after the command as well as the form itself: a verb may take an object, destination, or adjective. Do not assume that all verbs ending in the same infinitive letters share these irregular stems. The common words deserve retrieval practice precisely because they appear often enough for a guessed form to become a persistent habit.
Faça uma cópia, por favor.
Make a copy, please, using the standard singular você command.
The irregular command of doing or making is faça.
Venha aqui, por favor.
Come here, please, using the standard singular você command.
The irregular command venha directs the listener toward the speaker.
Keep the standard command form after não
In the standard você and vocês patterns, the negative instruction uses não before the corresponding command form: não fale, não coma, não abra, and their plural counterparts. Do not replace the verb with an infinitive merely because English uses do not. Portuguese does not insert a separate equivalent of English do into this construction. Brazilian conversational negatives also vary, and the lesson is not a claim that every speaker always follows the formal paradigm. For a writing task that specifies it, retain the appropriate form and listener agreement. A negative must also preserve the intended action and object. Removing a small word can turn a warning into encouragement, so verify the meaning before attending to spelling details.
Não abra a porta ainda.
Do not open the door yet, using the standard singular você pattern.
The negative precedes the same singular command form used for a positive instruction.
Não comam aqui.
Do not eat here, addressing a group with the standard command pattern.
The plural negative retains the final m on the command.

Change singular instructions to plural consistently
In the forms introduced here, the standard plural command often adds m to the singular form: fale becomes falem, abra becomes abram, and faça becomes façam. Some spelling details deserve attention, such as singular dê and plural deem. The command’s number comes from the listeners, not from the object they handle. One person can open several windows with a singular instruction, and several people can carry one box with a plural instruction. When an adjective describes the listeners, it must also fit them. Convert a complete sentence rather than changing one ending in isolation. This method helps you catch both the verb agreement and any description that still refers to the original single person.
Deem atenção às instruções.
Pay attention to the instructions, addressing a group with standard agreement.
The plural command of giving is written deem in current spelling.
Sejam pacientes.
Be patient, addressing a group with standard agreement.
Both the irregular command and the adjective preserve plural reference.
Place short objects with attention to register
Formal affirmative instructions commonly attach a short object pronoun with a hyphen, as in envie-me. Everyday Brazilian speech often places the pronoun before the command, and a phrase such as me ajude is readily understood in that register. The negative pattern commonly places the pronoun between não and the verb. Do not treat placement as independent from the actual writing context. The examples explicitly request either a careful written pattern or an ordinary negative, so the intended choice is clear. The pronoun also has its own participant reference: asking someone to send something to me differs from asking them to send it to us. Check that distinction before moving the pronoun. A neat hyphen cannot repair a sentence that identifies the wrong recipient.
Envie-me o endereço, por favor.
Send me the address, please, using attached placement in a formal affirmative instruction.
The recipient attaches with a hyphen while the address remains the transferred object.
Não me conte o final.
Do not tell me the ending.
The negative precedes the recipient and the command, preserving who should not receive the information.
Keep a negative recipient clear
Tell one person not to tell you the ending.
- Use the singular negative instruction.
- Choose me because the speaker is the recipient.
- Place the pronoun after não and before the command.
Compare your reasoning
Não me conte o final.
Build a usable sequence rather than a list of demands
Instructions become easier to follow when the order and purpose are clear. Words such as first, then, and after that can organize several steps, but each step still needs the correct listener and action. A courteous phrase can soften delivery without guaranteeing that a demand is appropriate; an urgent warning may need to be brief and direct. General signs and instructions can also use an infinitive, so do not assume that every public directive is a personal imperative. This lesson’s productive target is a small sequence addressed to a stated person or group. Read it as a real task: can the listener identify the object, complete one step, and understand what comes next? Clarity and grammatical agreement should support the same practical outcome.
Primeiro, abra o arquivo. Depois, faça uma cópia.
First, open the file. Then, make a copy, addressing one person with the standard pattern.
The ordered singular commands give two clear steps to the same listener.
Leiam o texto e respondam às perguntas.
Read the text and answer the questions, addressing a group with standard agreement.
The coordinated commands preserve plural listeners in both steps.

From understanding to using
Make your own example.
Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.
Your turn 1
Give one person two standard instructions: open the file and make a copy.
Compare with a model
Abra o arquivo e faça uma cópia.
Open the file and make a copy.
The first command is regular, while the second uses a frequent irregular form. Both address the same single listener.
- Did both verbs preserve singular address?
- Did you retrieve the irregular making command?
Your turn 2
Ask a group to wait here and not open the door yet, using the standard pattern.
Compare with a model
Esperem aqui e não abram a porta ainda.
Wait here and do not open the door yet.
Both commands address a group, and the negative keeps the same plural form used by a positive instruction.
- Did both instructions preserve the group?
- Does the negative apply to opening rather than waiting?
