Portuguese Comparisons: Mais, Tão, Melhor and Maior

Elementary to intermediate

Use mais or menos with a quality to compare unequal degrees, and tão ... quanto to express equality. Compare quantities with forms such as tantas cadeiras quanto. Frequent comparative words include melhor, pior, maior, and menor. Keep adjective agreement separate from the comparison itself, and distinguish better things from doing something better.

Choose the direction of the comparison

A comparison connects two things along a particular scale, such as price, quietness, speed, or usefulness. For a higher degree, use mais before the adjective; for a lower degree, use menos. The second term can follow que or do que in the ordinary comparisons practiced here. Both patterns are legitimate, so the exercises do not label one wrong simply because the other was introduced first. Decide what property you are comparing before choosing the wording. A room can be cheaper but noisier, so more is not automatically a recommendation and less is not automatically a disadvantage. Keeping the actual scale explicit helps you preserve the message when you reverse the order of the two things being compared.

Este quarto é mais barato do que aquele.

This room is cheaper than that one.

The higher degree applies to cheapness, so mais barato expresses the lower price.

Esta rua é menos movimentada que a outra.

This street is less busy than the other one.

The lower degree applies to how busy the street is.

Keep ordinary adjective agreement visible

The words marking degree do not replace an adjective’s agreement with its noun. Feminine plural rooms still require a matching adjective in a phrase such as mais tranquilas. The comparison word mais does not change for gender or number, and neither does menos in these patterns. This creates two separate tasks: identify the property and choose the correct degree, then make the adjective describe the intended noun. A plural object somewhere else in the sentence does not control this ending. When checking a comparison, point to the noun that the adjective actually describes. If the noun is understood from context, recover it before selecting the form. The same method works whether the sentence praises a feature, criticizes it, or simply reports a difference.

Estas salas são mais claras.

These rooms are brighter.

The comparative word stays unchanged while the adjective agrees with feminine plural rooms.

Essas opções são menos caras.

Those options are less expensive.

The degree word remains menos, and the adjective agrees with feminine plural options.

Express equal qualities with tão

For equal degrees of a quality, a useful pattern is tão plus adjective or adverb plus quanto. Portuguese also uses como in equal comparisons. The word tão remains unchanged, while a following adjective keeps its ordinary agreement. With an adverb, ask how the action is performed rather than what a noun is like. The comparison expresses equality on the selected scale; it does not claim that the two people or things are identical in every respect. A quiet room and another equally quiet room can differ in size, price, and location. Practice with a stated property so the equality has a clear meaning. In the challenge, the alternative changes the degree or the required form, not merely one legitimate connector.

A cozinha é tão clara quanto a sala.

The kitchen is as bright as the living room.

The pattern expresses equal brightness, with a feminine adjective for the kitchen.

Ela lê tão bem quanto ele.

She reads as well as he does.

The adverb describes reading, and tão marks equal degree.

Compare quantities with tanto and its forms

When the comparison concerns the amount or number of a noun, use the appropriate form of tanto: tanto, tanta, tantos, or tantas. The counted or measured noun supplies gender and number. With a verb alone, tanto quanto can compare how much the two people perform the action without noun agreement. Keep this equal comparison separate from a construction meaning both one thing and another. Word placement and the surrounding clause determine which meaning is present. A practical way to check quantity agreement is to name the noun explicitly before shortening anything. Then ask whether the second clause compares an equal amount. This avoids treating every occurrence of the same two small words as one fixed grammatical structure.

Temos tantas cadeiras quanto vocês têm.

We have as many chairs as you all have.

The form tantas agrees with feminine plural chairs, while the second clause compares their number.

Ela trabalha tanto quanto eu.

She works as much as I do.

The comparison measures the activity, so tanto functions without noun agreement.

Choose a quantity form

Say that your group has as many chairs as the listeners have.

  1. The comparison concerns a noun’s number.
  2. Chairs are feminine plural, so choose tantas.
  3. Keep the second clause as the comparison of equal quantity.

Temos tantas cadeiras quanto vocês têm.

Distinguish better things from performing better

The comparative melhor can describe a better thing or express doing something better. As an adjective, it forms plural melhores when the described noun is plural. As an adverb modifying an action, it remains unchanged. The same distinction applies to pior and plural adjective piores. Neither adjective changes simply because the noun is feminine: a feminine room can be melhor just as a masculine room can. Read the grammatical relationship before changing the ending. Are you evaluating the things themselves, or the way someone works, reads, or explains? These common comparisons have specialized forms, so use them directly in the basic patterns taught here. More elaborate comparisons involving participles have additional conventions beyond this lesson’s target.

Estas explicações são melhores.

These explanations are better.

The adjective describes plural explanations and therefore becomes melhores.

Elas explicam melhor agora.

They explain better now.

The comparative modifies how they explain, so the adverb remains melhor.

Identify the word being modified

Say that several people explain better now.

  1. The comparison describes their explaining, not the people as better individuals.
  2. Use adverbial melhor without plural agreement.
  3. Keep the finite verb plural for the subject.
Compare your reasoning

Eles explicam melhor agora.

Use maior and menor for the relevant scale

The frequent comparatives maior and menor express larger and smaller on a relevant scale. They have plural forms maiores and menores, but no separate feminine endings. Their interpretation depends on what is being compared: a room may be larger in size, while a number or quantity may be greater. Do not assume that one English adjective maps to the same Portuguese word in every context. For instance, descriptions of a person’s age can use other ordinary expressions, so the examples here state a clear size comparison. Use the comparative directly in these basic patterns rather than adding another marker of greater degree. Then check plural agreement independently. A comparative can be correct in meaning but still fail to match the noun it describes.

As janelas da frente são maiores.

The front windows are larger.

The comparative adjective takes plural agreement without changing for feminine gender.

Esta caixa é menor que aquela.

This box is smaller than that one.

The singular comparative expresses the lower size on the stated scale.

Separate the most from simply very

A relative superlative selects an extreme within a group, often using an article with mais or menos and an adjective. A phrase such as a mais tranquila do prédio identifies the quietest within the building. The group matters because it defines the comparison. By contrast, muito tranquila gives a high degree of quietness without ranking the room against every other room. Portuguese also has suffix based superlatives, but they involve spelling and lexical choices that deserve separate attention. For now, distinguish ranking from intensity. When recommending an option, specify whether you mean it is very good, better than another option, or the best of the stated set. These are different claims and should remain different in the translation.

Esta é a sala mais tranquila do prédio.

This is the quietest room in the building.

The article, superlative phrase and named group create a ranking within the building.

Este é o melhor caminho.

This is the best route.

The article combines with the irregular comparative to identify the best option in context.

Common mistakes

Check the construction

Instead ofEste quarto é menos barato do que aquele.

For this meaningEste quarto é mais barato do que aquele.

The comparison reverses the degree of cheapness and therefore changes the price relationship. The higher degree applies to cheapness, so mais barato expresses the lower price.

Preserve the intended meaning

Instead ofEla trabalha tantas quanto eu.

For this meaningEla trabalha tanto quanto eu.

There is no feminine plural noun licensing this quantity form in the requested action comparison. The comparison measures the activity, so tanto functions without noun agreement.

Place each element carefully

Instead ofAs janelas da frente são maior.

For this meaningAs janelas da frente são maiores.

The singular comparative does not agree with the plural windows. The comparative adjective takes plural agreement without changing for feminine gender.

Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.

Your turn 1

Compare two rooms by saying that this one is cheaper but less quiet than the other.

Compare with a model

Este quarto é mais barato, mas menos tranquilo que o outro.

This room is cheaper but less quiet than the other one.

The two degree words operate on different properties. A price advantage can coexist with a quietness disadvantage.

  • Which property follows each degree word?
  • Do both adjectives agree with the room?

Your turn 2

Say that two feminine plural options are better and less expensive.

Compare with a model

Estas duas opções são melhores e menos caras.

These two options are better and less expensive.

The irregular comparative and ordinary adjective both match the plural noun, while the degree word stays unchanged.

  • Did the adjective melhor become plural?
  • Did menos stay unchanged?
