Show an action while it is unfolding
The progressive focuses on an action in progress at a reference time. In Brazilian Portuguese, a common construction combines a form of estar with a gerund, as in estou lendo. The reference time may be now, a past moment, or another time supplied by context. For this lesson, begin with what is happening now and then shift the same construction into a past scene. The phrase does not necessarily identify when the activity began or how much longer it will last. It shows its unfolding. Other Portuguese varieties also use constructions with a and an infinitive, so do not treat the Brazilian gerund pattern as the only possible Portuguese usage. The examples and production targets here consistently use Brazilian Portuguese.
Estou lendo agora.
I am reading now.
The first person present of estar combines with a gerund to show reading in progress.
Ela está falando com a irmã.
She is talking with her sister.
The singular auxiliary and gerund present a conversation as ongoing.
Make estar carry person and time
In the present progressive, estou, está, estamos, and estão identify the persons introduced in this course. The gerund names the action while the auxiliary carries agreement and the present time reference. A question does not require an English style helping verb or an inversion of these two Portuguese words. Keep the auxiliary matched to the grammatical subject: você uses está, vocês uses estão, nós uses estamos, and standard a gente uses está. The number of the object has no control over this agreement. If one person is reading several documents, the auxiliary remains singular. Build the construction in two steps, selecting the subject’s auxiliary before adding the action form.
Nós estamos esperando.
We are waiting.
The auxiliary takes first person plural agreement while the gerund stays unchanged.
Vocês estão trabalhando?
Are you all working?
The plural listener subject uses estão in the question.
Build gerunds from the three regular families
For regular verbs, replace infinitive ar with ando, er with endo, and ir with indo. The resulting forms include falando, comendo, and abrindo. The final part belongs to the gerund, not to a person ending, so it does not become plural when several people act. Use the infinitive to identify the family before creating the new form. A present tense stem may mislead you, especially when the finite verb has a different shape. Reading supplies another useful model: ler becomes lendo. Practice forming the gerund inside an actual progressive phrase so that you also remember the required auxiliary. A bare gerund can have other functions, but it is not by itself a complete ordinary statement of who is doing something now.
Ele está comendo.
He is eating.
The er infinitive produces a gerund ending in endo.
Elas estão abrindo as janelas.
They are opening the windows, referring to women.
The ir verb produces abrindo, unchanged despite the plural subject.
Construct a current group activity
Say that two women are opening the windows.
- Choose plural estão for the subject.
- Build abrindo from abrir.
- Leave the gerund unchanged for gender and number.
Elas estão abrindo as janelas.
Retrieve common special forms accurately
Some frequent gerunds deserve deliberate attention. Being has sendo, having has tendo, coming has vindo, and putting has pondo. Their forms should be learned from the corresponding infinitives rather than guessed from an English word ending in ing. The same written form can also have another grammatical job in a different construction, so read its surrounding auxiliary. For example, vindo is a useful coming gerund with estar. Do not assume that every word after estar is a gerund: an adjective or participle may describe a state instead. A message about someone being patient can use está sendo paciente when it evaluates current behavior. The construction is not limited to visible physical movement.
Ela está vindo para cá.
She is coming here.
The gerund of coming is vindo, paired with a present singular auxiliary.
Ele está pondo os livros na mesa.
He is putting the books on the table.
The gerund of putting is pondo.
Separate current activity, habit and a resulting state
A progressive often highlights what is happening during the relevant period, while a simple present can express an ordinary routine. Compare reading now with reading every evening. Context can make either construction more flexible, so the contrast is not an absolute ban on time expressions or temporary habits. A further distinction separates an action from its result. Estão abrindo a porta describes people opening it; a porta está aberta describes the door’s state. Both contain estar, but the gerund and the participle perform different jobs. Ask what your message is about: people doing an action, their usual behavior, or the state of a thing. This meaning check prevents a mechanical translation based only on the English word is.
Eu leio antes de dormir.
I read before bed, stating an ordinary habit in the simple present.
The simple present describes the customary activity rather than focusing on its unfolding now.
A porta está aberta.
The door is open, describing its state.
The feminine participle describes the resulting state of the door.
Move an ongoing action into a past scene
To describe activity already in progress at a past moment, use an imperfect form of estar with the same gerund. The selected forms are estava, estávamos, and estavam. The main action word does not change merely because the auxiliary moves into the past. This construction often combines with a preterite event, such as someone arriving while you were reading. The arrival does not necessarily stop the activity; it simply enters the scene. Check the auxiliary’s accent and agreement independently from the gerund. A plural object still does not create a plural auxiliary. When a story already supplies the past reference, an explicit time phrase may be unnecessary, but a beginner’s first examples benefit from a clear when clause.
Nós estávamos fazendo o jantar.
We were making dinner.
The imperfect auxiliary marks we and past time, while fazendo remains a gerund.
Ela estava lendo quando chegamos.
She was reading when we arrived.
The ongoing past reading provides the scene for our completed arrival.
Change only what marks time
Move I am making dinner into a past scene.
- Keep the gerund fazendo.
- Replace present estou with imperfect estava.
- Use context to identify the earlier reference time.
Compare your reasoning
Eu estava fazendo o jantar.
Keep negatives and objects in a natural Brazilian group
A progressive can contain a negative or an object pronoun without losing its basic auxiliary and gerund structure. Não estou entendendo places the negative before the auxiliary. In Brazilian usage, a short object can appear between the auxiliary and the main verb, as in está me ajudando. This intervening placement is accepted in educated Brazilian usage. It should not be rejected merely because another variety often orders pronouns differently. Identify which participant acts and which receives the action before deciding where to place the short form. Then verify that the gerund still names the intended action. In longer messages, a clear full noun may be easier to follow than several ambiguous pronouns. The practical goal is accurate ongoing meaning with a readable participant structure.
Ela está nos ajudando.
She is helping us.
The object can stand between the auxiliary and gerund, and the auxiliary agrees with she.
Eu não estou trabalhando agora.
I am not working now.
The negative precedes the auxiliary and denies current ongoing work.

Common mistakes
Describe reading that is happening now
Instead ofVou ler amanhã.
For this meaningEstou lendo agora.
Situation: you want to say that you are reading now. Vou ler amanhã. is grammatical, but it announces a future plan and does not match this meaning. Use Estou lendo agora. to present the reading as in progress now.
Preserve the intended meaning
Instead ofEle está poendo os livros na mesa.
For this meaningEle está pondo os livros na mesa.
The invented gerund does not belong to the verb pôr. The gerund of putting is pondo.
Describe dinner preparation in progress at a past moment
Instead ofNós estamos fazendo o jantar.
For this meaningNós estávamos fazendo o jantar.
Situation: you are describing what your group was doing at a particular moment yesterday. Nós estamos fazendo o jantar. is grammatical, but its present auxiliary does not give that past viewpoint. Use estávamos for the past scene and keep the gerund fazendo unchanged.
From understanding to using
Make your own example.
Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.
Your turn 1
Describe your group waiting now, using a gente and standard agreement.
Compare with a model
A gente está esperando agora.
We are waiting now.
The group expression uses a singular auxiliary, and the gerund presents the current activity.
- Did the auxiliary match the grammatical subject?
- Did the action remain a gerund?
Your turn 2
Say that a woman was helping you when a colleague arrived.
Compare with a model
Ela estava me ajudando quando um colega chegou.
She was helping me when a colleague arrived.
The imperfect progressive supplies the ongoing activity. The recipient or object pronoun sits before the gerund in a Brazilian pattern.
- Which verb group supplies the background?
- Did you preserve the speaker as the person being helped?
