Russian comparatives and comparison standards

Beginner to lower intermediate

Russian can compare with a simple form such as быстре́е or a compound form such as бо́лее удо́бный. A simple comparative does not change for the subject’s gender or number in the basic predicate use. The comparison standard can be expressed with чем, or with a genitive noun or pronoun after a simple comparative in suitable constructions.

Compare a property with a simple predicate form

Э́та су́мка ле́гче says this bag is lighter in a context where the standard is understood. The simple comparative supplies the property difference. Unlike an ordinary full adjective, this predicate form does not acquire a feminine ending to agree with the bag.

The comparison needs a recoverable standard, either stated or available from the conversation. Lighter than another bag does not necessarily mean light in an absolute sense. A bag can be lighter than a very heavy alternative and still be too heavy for the user’s purpose. Keep relative and absolute judgments separate.

The lesson uses invented comparisons between specific objects. It does not make claims about every item of a type. When practicing, name the two objects or describe a small measurement scenario so the direction of the comparison is clear. The grammar can organize the claim but cannot supply missing real world evidence.

Э́та су́мка ле́гче.

This bag is lighter.

The simple comparative remains unchanged despite the feminine subject.

Э́ти су́мки ле́гче.

These bags are lighter.

The same comparative form appears with a plural subject.

Learn common forms rather than one universal suffix

Many simple comparatives use an ee ending, but others involve a different ending and stem change. бы́стрый gives быстре́е, while дорого́й gives доро́же. The form and stress should be learned with the adjective. A single mechanical suffix rule will not produce every common comparison correctly.

Useful irregular forms include лу́чше and ху́же for better and worse. These are high frequency words worth retrieving as complete forms. Do not build a regular looking comparative from the English meaning alone. The familiar base adjective and its comparative may have quite different shapes.

Simple comparative forms can also function in comparisons of how an action is performed. Faster running and a faster vehicle both concern a scale, but the surrounding sentence determines whether the comparison describes an action or a thing. Keep that grammatical role visible instead of treating every comparative as a noun modifier.

Э́тот вариа́нт лу́чше.

This option is better.

Luchshe is an irregular comparative.

Она́ чита́ет быстре́е.

She reads faster.

The comparison concerns the manner or speed of an action.

Use boleye with an agreeing full adjective

The compound pattern combines бо́лее with an ordinary full adjective. In бо́лее удо́бная су́мка, the adjective agrees with the feminine noun, while boleye remains unchanged. This is different from the invariant simple predicate comparative.

When the noun phrase takes a case in a larger sentence, the full adjective follows its normal agreement pattern. The comparison word does not cancel gender, number, or case. Begin with one clear nominative phrase, then use a familiar object phrase to see the agreement change in context.

Do not combine boleye with an already simple comparative in the standard model. The construction uses the base adjective, not a second comparative form. Also avoid assuming every simple comparative can be placed before a noun exactly like a full adjective. Choose the compound pattern when the exercise asks for a transparent agreeing noun modifier.

Мне нужна́ бо́лее удо́бная су́мка.

I need a more convenient bag.

Boleye is unchanged; the full adjective agrees with bag.

Я выбира́ю бо́лее удо́бную су́мку.

I am choosing a more convenient bag.

The adjective follows the feminine accusative noun phrase.

Build an agreeing comparative noun phrase

Say you are choosing a more convenient bag.

  1. Use the compound бо́лее plus the base adjective.
  2. The object bag is feminine accusative.
  3. Make the adjective удо́бную to match it.

Я выбира́ю бо́лее удо́бную су́мку.

Name a standard with chem

A chem phrase can state the comparison standard: Э́та су́мка ле́гче, чем та. The second item is the standard against which the first is evaluated. The comma before chem is part of the ordinary written pattern in these examples.

In a simple subject comparison such as she runs faster than I do, the pronoun after chem can be nominative because it represents the subject of the understood comparison clause. Do not mechanically force every pronoun after chem into genitive. The fuller relationship determines the appropriate form.

Comparisons can become ambiguous if the second phrase might represent a subject, object, or another role. This lesson uses short parallel subject comparisons so the intended reading is clear. If a longer sentence permits more than one interpretation, state the missing verb or phrase rather than relying on a learner to infer a hidden structure.

Э́та су́мка ле́гче, чем та.

This bag is lighter than that one.

Chem introduces the explicitly named standard.

Она́ чита́ет быстре́е, чем я.

She reads faster than I do.

Ya is the subject of the understood comparison clause.

Use a genitive standard after a simple comparative

With a simple comparative, a noun or pronoun in the genitive can name the standard without chem. Она́ ста́рше меня́ says she is older than me. The pronoun form belongs to the comparison construction; it is not a direct object of an action.

A noun standard changes according to its declension. бра́та can be the genitive of brother in a comparison. Because case forms can overlap, identify the grammatical role before labeling the ending. The same visible form can serve a different case in another sentence with another governor.

This lesson keeps the genitive standard with simple comparatives. The compound boleye plus adjective pattern is introduced with a clear chem comparison instead of extending the bare genitive pattern mechanically. Learn the frame as a whole: comparative type, standard marker, and noun or pronoun form.

Она́ ста́рше меня́.

She is older than me.

Menya is a genitive comparison standard.

Э́та кни́га доро́же журна́ла.

This book is more expensive than the magazine.

The magazine is the standard in the genitive.

Use a genitive pronoun standard

Say: She is older than me.

  1. Choose the simple comparative ста́рше.
  2. Use the genitive first person pronoun меня́.
  3. Keep her as the subject.
Compare your reasoning

Она́ ста́рше меня́.

Measure a difference without confusing it with a total

A difference can be expressed with на plus an accusative quantity phrase. на два го́да gives an age difference of two years. It does not state either person’s total age. The comparison establishes an ordering and the quantity measures the gap.

A multiplicative comparison uses a different pattern, commonly v plus a quantity such as two times. This lesson focuses production on a simple difference because that is easier to verify from a small invented example. Recognize that an additive difference and a ratio are not the same mathematical relationship.

The numeral phrase has its own noun form rules. Do not treat the word following a number as an ordinary singular noun that can be left unchanged in every context. Use a familiar complete phrase first, then expand the number system separately. Accuracy in the quantity is part of the comparison’s meaning, not a decorative extra.

Она́ ста́рше меня́ на два го́да.

She is two years older than me.

The quantity measures the age gap.

Э́та доска́ длинне́е на деся́ть сантиме́тров.

This board is ten centimeters longer.

The difference is stated relative to the understood comparison board.

Keep time and comparison scope clear

A comparison can be placed in a past or future context with the appropriate form of be when needed. The simple comparative remains unchanged: a bag was lighter or will be lighter. Time belongs to the larger predicate, while the comparative gives the relation on the chosen scale.

When comparing possessions, identify the objects rather than accidentally comparing one object with an unrelated person. Context can permit omission, but a beginner should keep both sides recoverable. My bag and your bag form a clear pair. Then choose whether the second noun can naturally be omitted without confusing the reference.

For production, compare two objects with a simple predicate, build one compound adjective phrase, and name a person as a genitive standard. Add a difference only when you have a clear invented measurement. Retrieve the patterns later and explain which element agrees, which remains unchanged, and what exactly is being compared.

Ра́ньше э́та су́мка была́ ле́гче.

Previously this bag was lighter.

The past form of be carries time and gender; the comparative remains unchanged.

Моя́ су́мка ле́гче твое́й.

My bag is lighter than yours.

The omitted bag is recoverable in the genitive standard phrase.

  • No, the comparative form stays the same.
  • Yes, it must become an ordinary plural adjective.
Check the answer

Answer: No, the comparative form stays the same.

No, the comparative form stays the same.: The simple predicate comparative is invariant here.

Yes, it must become an ordinary plural adjective.: That would confuse it with full adjective agreement.

Question 2

Does lighter than another object guarantee light enough for every purpose?

  • Yes, a comparative always means ideal.
  • No, the comparison is relative.
Check the answer

Answer: No, the comparison is relative.

Yes, a comparative always means ideal.: The form does not make that judgment.

No, the comparison is relative.: Absolute suitability needs more information.

Question 3

Choose the common comparative meaning better.

  • лучше
  • хорошее
Check the answer

Answer: лучше

лучше: Luchshe is the established comparative.

хорошее: Khorosheye is a full adjective form, not the requested comparative.

Question 4

Question 5

Choose the standard compound phrase more convenient bag.

  • более удобная сумка
  • более удобнее сумка
Check the answer

Answer: более удобная сумка

более удобная сумка: Boleye combines with the base full adjective.

более удобнее сумка: This doubles the comparative marking and loses the intended agreement.

Question 6

Does boleye eliminate the adjective’s case agreement?

  • Yes, every following adjective becomes invariant.
  • No, the full adjective still agrees normally.
Check the answer

Answer: No, the full adjective still agrees normally.

Yes, every following adjective becomes invariant.: That rule confuses the compound and simple patterns.

No, the full adjective still agrees normally.: The comparison word and adjective have different behavior.

Question 7

Choose the taught subject comparison than I do.

  • чем я
  • чем меня
Check the answer

Answer: чем я

чем я: The pronoun represents the subject of the understood clause.

чем меня: Chem does not universally require genitive.

Question 8

Why make the two compared roles clear?

  • The roles never affect interpretation
  • An omitted phrase can otherwise make the comparison ambiguous.
Check the answer

Answer: An omitted phrase can otherwise make the comparison ambiguous.

The roles never affect interpretation: That would ignore the sentence’s structure.

An omitted phrase can otherwise make the comparison ambiguous.: Parallel roles identify what is being compared.

Question 9

Choose the pronoun standard in she is older than me.

Are two years older and twice as old the same relation?

  • Yes, every quantity comparison is equivalent.
  • No, one is an additive difference and the other a ratio.
Check the answer

Answer: No, one is an additive difference and the other a ratio.

Yes, every quantity comparison is equivalent.: The claim would produce incorrect comparisons.

No, one is an additive difference and the other a ratio.: The constructions express different measurements.

Question 13

In the past bag model, does legche itself gain a feminine past ending?

  • No, byla carries the time and agreement.
  • Yes, the comparative becomes a past verb
Check the answer

Answer: No, byla carries the time and agreement.

No, byla carries the time and agreement.: The comparative stays invariant.

Question 14

What should a comparison self check identify?

  • Only which item the speaker prefers
  • Both items, the scale, the comparative type, and the standard form
Check the answer

Answer: Both items, the scale, the comparative type, and the standard form

Only which item the speaker prefers: That does not verify the grammar or the claim.

Both items, the scale, the comparative type, and the standard form: Preference need not match the measured relation.
