Name the property and comparison standard
A useful comparison identifies what is being compared and on which property. This house is larger than that house compares size, while this book is cheaper than that book compares price. A sentence can be grammatically correct and still make the wrong factual claim, so the practice supplies a small scenario when meaning depends on numbers or direction.
The comparative is often called an elative in Arabic grammar because related forms can express comparative or superlative meanings in different constructions. Do not assign the English word most to the form independently of its surroundings. Akbar can mean larger in one sentence and largest in another. The noun phrase and comparison expression help establish the intended reading.
These examples use Modern Standard Arabic and a small set of common, verified forms. Some adjectives form comparisons differently or have lexical restrictions. Learn the supplied pairs before trying to derive every comparative from an English gloss. The goal is a usable comparison pattern with clear limits, not a universal word building shortcut.
هذا البيت أكبر من ذلك البيت.
This house is larger than that house.
هذا الكتاب أرخص من ذلك الكتاب.
This book is cheaper than that book.

Retrieve frequent comparative families
Many common comparative forms follow a shape beginning with a hamza and a short a vowel. Useful pairs include كبير and أكبر, big and bigger; صغير and أصغر, small and smaller; رخيص and أرخص, cheap and cheaper; and جميل and أجمل, beautiful and more beautiful. Notice the relationship without assuming every adjective can be transformed by copying one surface spelling.
Common forms for better include أفضل and أحسن, used according to context. More and less include أكثر and أقلّ. The shadda in aqall marks a doubled final consonant and should not be ignored when reading aloud. Forms with weak root consonants can look different again, such as أغلى, more expensive, and أقوى, stronger.
A vocabulary record should connect the form to an actual comparison. A word meaning smaller can describe size or age in a suitable context, so the surrounding nouns matter. Practice changing the property while keeping the two objects fixed, then explain how the factual claim changes.
هذه الحقيبة أغلى من تلك الحقيبة.
This bag is more expensive than that bag.
هذا المثال أوضح من ذلك المثال.
This example is clearer than that example; awdah is a supplied comparative form.
Keep the basic min comparative invariant
In the ordinary indefinite comparative construction with min taught here, the comparative stays in its default masculine singular shape. A feminine room can be أكبر than another room. Do not substitute a feminine adjective form simply because ordinary descriptive adjectives agree with feminine nouns. The comparative construction has its own rule.
This contrasts with a plain description: the room is large uses كبيرة, while the room is larger than the office uses أكبر. Both describe the same room, but they organize the property differently. The comparison explicitly introduces a standard and selects the comparative form. Merely adding min after an ordinary adjective does not automatically produce the taught construction.
Other elative constructions, especially forms with the definite article or particular construct relationships, have additional agreement possibilities. This lesson does not generalize its invariance rule to every occurrence of an elative in Arabic. The practice consistently names or shows the basic min construction when testing the default form.
الغرفة كبيرة.
The room is large.
الغرفة أكبر من المكتب.
The room is larger than the office.
Compare a feminine subject
Make the room is large into the room is larger than the office.
- Start with the feminine subject الغرفة.
- Choose the comparative أكبر, not the ordinary agreeing adjective.
- Add the standard with من المكتب.
الغرفة أكبر من المكتب.

Track the direction of min and its complement
In A is larger than B, the phrase after min supplies the standard B. Reversing A and B while keeping larger changes the claim. To preserve the original relation, reverse the comparative too: if this house is larger than that house, that house is smaller than this house. The exercise tests meaning as well as the choice of a grammatical word.
Min is a preposition, so an ordinary following noun has genitive case in a fully inflected standard phrase. A pronoun attaches to the preposition rather than appearing as an independent subject pronoun. The useful form مني, than me, contains a doubled n in full vocalization: مِنّي. It is not formed by placing the independent I pronoun after min.
A comparison standard may be a person, a thing, or a larger phrase. Keep its reference clear. If the conversation contains several bags, that one may need a gesture or a fuller description. Correct morphology cannot tell the listener which unmentioned object you privately intended.
سامر أصغر مني.
Samer is younger than me, in an age context.
ذلك البيت أصغر من هذا البيت.
That house is smaller than this house.

Ask which alternative has the greater degree
A comparison question can ask which of two known alternatives has the property. The supplied pattern أيهما أكبر؟ means which of the two is larger? The ending refers to the two alternatives already established. If you name the choices, the alternative question can use أم between them. The listener then knows the set being compared.
A vague question such as which is better still needs a relevant criterion. A bag might be cheaper but heavier, and a room might be larger but noisier. The grammar does not decide which property matters to the speaker. In practice, name size, price, or another clear criterion so the answer can be evaluated against the scenario.
The question’s comparative does not establish that one choice is superior. The two might tie, or the available information may be insufficient. A useful language response can ask for clarification or state that the difference is unknown. The challenge avoids such ambiguity by supplying distinct values when one answer must be selected.
أيهما أكبر، هذا البيت أم ذلك البيت؟
Which is larger, this house or that house?
أيهما أرخص، هذا الكتاب أم ذلك الكتاب؟
Which is cheaper, this book or that book?

Build a bounded superlative expression
A comparative form followed by an appropriate noun in a construct relationship can express a superlative. أقرب محطة means the nearest station, and أفضل كتاب can mean the best book. The following noun is genitive in fully inflected Standard Arabic. This is not the same structure as a min comparison with two explicitly named items.
The comparison group matters. The nearest station to this hotel is a more useful claim than nearest with no understood starting point. The largest room in this house is a bounded claim about the house’s rooms; the largest room in the city requires a much wider basis. Grammar can form both statements, but it does not supply the evidence for them.
Keep the first examples small and concrete. If a practice scene lists three rooms with different sizes, it supports selecting the largest among those three. If two rooms tie, an unqualified claim that only one is largest needs clarification. The form alone does not resolve the facts of the comparison.
أين أقرب محطة؟
Where is the nearest station?
هذه أكبر غرفة في البيت.
This is the largest room in the house.
Ask for a nearest place
Ask where the nearest station is.
- Choose the supplied elative أقرب.
- Put محطة after it in the construct expression.
- Ask location with أين.
Compare your reasoning
أين أقرب محطة؟

Separate price, quality and preference
Cheaper does not mean better, and better does not automatically mean preferred by every person. The comparative names a relation on a property. A learner should preserve that property when translating or answering a question. If one book costs ten units and another costs twenty, the first is cheaper; nothing in those prices alone establishes which teaches more effectively.
A negative comparison also requires careful interpretation. Saying one item is not cheaper does not by itself prove it is more expensive, because the prices might be equal. This is a meaning distinction, independent of Arabic adjective formation. Use the facts supplied rather than converting every negative comparative into its opposite.
For the production task, write one size comparison and its equivalent reversed relation. Then ask for a nearest place using a superlative expression. These tasks share elative forms but use different constructions, helping you check that the ending and the phrase after it serve the intended comparison rather than a memorized English word order.
هذا الكتاب أرخص، لكنه ليس أفضل.
This book is cheaper, but it is not better.
هذا البيت أكبر، وذلك البيت أصغر.
This house is larger, and that house is smaller, in the stated comparison.

Notice the difference
Common mistakes
Use a comparative in the target min construction
Instead ofالغرفة كبيرة من المكتب.
For this meaningالغرفة أكبر من المكتب.
The ordinary adjective does not express this comparative construction.
Attach a pronoun to min
Instead ofأصغر من أنا
For this meaningأصغر مني
The comparison preposition takes a suffix in this phrase.
Do not reverse the intended relation
Instead ofذلك البيت أكبر من هذا البيت.
For this meaningذلك البيت أصغر من هذا البيت.
When this house is larger, the reversed equivalent must say that house is smaller. The first sentence is grammatical but changes the claim.
A nearby place need not be nearest
Instead ofأين محطة قريبة؟
For this meaningأين أقرب محطة؟
For the intended nearest station, use the superlative expression. A nearby station question asks less specifically.

Make your own example.
Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.
Your turn 1
Say this house is larger than that house, then restate the same relation starting with that house.
Compare with a model
هذا البيت أكبر من ذلك البيت. ذلك البيت أصغر من هذا البيت.
This house is larger than that house. That house is smaller than this house.
Both order and comparative reverse, preserving the same size relation.
- Did min introduce the standard each time?
- Did the underlying size relation stay the same?
Your turn 2
Ask where the nearest station is, then describe this room as the largest room in the house.
Compare with a model
أين أقرب محطة؟ هذه أكبر غرفة في البيت.
Where is the nearest station? This is the largest room in the house.
Both use an elative with a following noun; the second explicitly names the comparison group.
- Did you use the supplied superlative construction?
- Did the largest claim stay limited to the house?
