Italian Conditional: Vorrei, Potrei and Courteous Requests

Elementary to intermediate

The present conditional can soften a wish, request, or suggestion. Vorrei expresses I would like, while potresti and potrebbe can ask whether a familiar or respectfully addressed person could help. The verb still agrees with its subject, and a following action commonly stays in the infinitive.

Choose what the request is doing

A direct statement of wanting and a conditional request can refer to the same desired action while presenting it differently. Vorrei often softens the speaker’s wish, leaving room for the listener’s response. It does not guarantee that any demand will be socially appropriate. The size of the favor, the relationship, and the situation still matter. Describe the practical need before selecting the wording. A request for information may suit a brief conditional question, while an urgent warning may require a direct instruction. This lesson concentrates on ordinary requests and suggestions. Conditional forms also appear in hypotheses and reported information, so do not assume every occurrence is simply a polite version of the present tense.

Vorrei un’informazione.

I would like some information.

The conditional presents the speaker’s wish in an attenuated form.

Potrei entrare?

Could I come in?

The first person conditional asks about the speaker’s own permission or possibility.

Build the regular conditional endings

The present conditional uses the endings ei, esti, ebbe, emmo, este, and ebbero after the appropriate stem ending in r. Regular are verbs change that family vowel to e, giving parlerei, while regular ere and ire verbs give forms such as prenderei and dormirei. Keep the person distinction visible: parleremmo means we would speak, while the future parleremo means we will speak. The doubled m is meaningful. Work from a known infinitive and the requested subject, then check spelling. An English would does not remain as a separate helper word in this Italian construction; the conditional information is carried by the verb itself.

Prenderemmo due camere.

We would take two rooms.

The conditional first person plural has the ending emmo.

Dormirei qui.

I would sleep here.

The ire verb retains i before the conditional stem ending in r.

Retrieve useful irregular stems as complete phrases

Several frequent verbs use irregular stems shared with their future forms. Useful conditionals include sarei, avrei, andrei, farei, potrei, dovrei, and vorrei. The endings still identify person and number, even when the stem is irregular. Learn the ones that serve a real purpose: asking for something, suggesting an action, or explaining what you would do. Avoid constructing vorrei by adding a regular ending to the present voglio. If the subject changes, keep the conditional stem and choose a new ending, as in vorremmo. A complete phrase gives you both the form and the construction that follows it, which is more useful than an isolated translation of would.

Vorremmo parlare con lei.

We would like to speak with her.

The irregular wanting stem combines with a first person plural conditional ending.

Sarei disponibile domani.

I would be available tomorrow.

The conditional of being is sarei, and can refer to a later possibility.

Match the request to the addressee

A request addressed with familiar tu uses second person singular agreement, as in potresti. Respectful Lei uses third person singular agreement, as in potrebbe, regardless of the listener’s gender. A group normally addressed with voi uses potreste. These choices concern the listener, not the speaker who benefits from the favor. The subject is often understood rather than written, but its agreement remains. Adding please does not change a familiar ending into a respectful one. State the relationship in practice cues and check the verb against it. This turns politeness into a coordinated choice of address, wording, and context rather than a decorative word at the end.

A helpful rehearsal names the roles before shortening the question. If you ask a stranger to send something to you, the stranger controls the respectful verb form while the speaker controls the recipient pronoun. These two decisions can point to different people. Restoring a full sentence with both participants makes it clear why a first person object does not require a first person modal.

Potresti aspettare un momento?

Could you wait a moment, addressing one familiar person?

The second person conditional matches familiar singular address.

Potrebbe ripetere, per favore?

Could you repeat that, addressing one person respectfully with Lei?

Respectful singular address selects the third person conditional.

Choose the listener’s form

Ask one person respectfully whether they could send the schedule.

  1. The listener is addressed with Lei.
  2. Choose third person conditional potrebbe.
  3. Leave sending as an infinitive.

Potrebbe mandare l’orario?

Leave the second action in the infinitive

A modal conditional commonly takes an infinitive without a connecting preposition: potrei leggere, dovrei partire, vorrei sapere. The modal carries person, number, and conditional meaning; the infinitive identifies the action. Do not conjugate both verbs simply because both refer to the same person. If the action has an object pronoun, ordinary modal placement allows the pronoun before the modal or attached to the infinitive. Keep a combined pronoun group together and remove final e when attaching it. First construct the message with full noun phrases, then shorten it. This preserves the requested action while you manage several small forms at once.

Vorrei sapere l’orario.

I would like to know the schedule.

The conditional modal is followed directly by the infinitive naming the desired action.

Potresti mandarmelo?

Could you send it to me, addressing one familiar person and referring to a masculine document?

The recipient and object attach together to the infinitive after final e is removed.

Keep a request’s objects together

Ask a friend to send a masculine document to you, using both objects.

  1. Choose familiar potresti.
  2. Combine recipient me with object lo.
  3. Attach the group to the infinitive after removing final e.

Give a suggestion with an appropriate strength

The conditional can present advice or a preference without stating it as an obligation. Dovresti often means you should, while dovrei can express the speaker’s own tentative obligation or expectation. Context decides the precise force, so translate the whole sentence rather than equating every form with one English modal. You can also use sarebbe with an evaluation, such as saying that a quieter room would be better. Any adjective still agrees with the noun it describes. The conditional does not remove that relationship. When practicing advice, state the situation first and then write an actionable suggestion; a grammatically gentle form can still sound intrusive if it disregards the listener’s circumstances.

Dovresti leggere le istruzioni.

You should read the instructions, addressing one familiar person.

The conditional presents advice, and the action remains infinitive.

Queste camere sarebbero più tranquille.

These rooms would be quieter.

The conditional is plural, and the adjective agrees with the feminine plural rooms.

Recognize the boundaries of a useful request pattern

The present conditional can refer to now or to a later possibility. It is not simply a past tense because English would sometimes occurs in past narration. Modern Italian normally uses a compound conditional to express a future viewed from a past reporting point. Hypothetical if clauses also have their own patterns; the conditional is not automatically placed after every se. An indirect question containing se, meaning whether, differs from a conditional if clause. Those distinctions matter when you expand beyond requests. For now, check the intended subject, the degree of commitment, and the following construction. Negative requests or wishes retain non before the pronoun and finite verb group.

Non vorrei disturbarla.

I would not want to disturb her.

The negative precedes the conditional, and the object attaches to the infinitive.

Domani potremmo incontrarci.

We could meet tomorrow.

The present conditional expresses a later possibility, with a reflexive or reciprocal infinitive matching we.

Common mistakes

Check the construction

Instead ofVorremmo un’informazione.

For this meaningVorrei un’informazione.

This changes the requester from I to we. The conditional presents the speaker’s wish in an attenuated form.

Preserve the intended meaning

Instead ofPotresti ripetere, per favore?

For this meaningPotrebbe ripetere, per favore?

The familiar ending does not match the explicitly requested respectful address. Respectful singular address selects the third person conditional.

Place each element carefully

Instead ofDovresti leggi le istruzioni.

For this meaningDovresti leggere le istruzioni.

The finite second verb does not fit this modal construction. The conditional presents advice, and the action remains infinitive.

From understanding to using

Make your own example.

Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.

Your turn 1

Say that you would like two rooms and ask respectfully whether they would be available tomorrow.

Compare with a model

Vorrei due camere. Sarebbero disponibili domani?

I would like two rooms. Would they be available tomorrow?

The first subject is the speaker; the second is the plural rooms, not the person addressed.

  • Who is the subject of each verb?
  • Does the adjective agree with plural rooms?

Your turn 2

Ask a familiar person to repeat a masculine message and say you would like to write it down.

Compare with a model

Potresti ripeterlo? Vorrei scriverlo.

Could you repeat it? I would like to write it.

Both objects attach to infinitives, while the modals identify different subjects.

  • Did the first modal address the listener?
  • Did the second modal identify the speaker?
