Pinyin represents Mandarin pronunciation using Latin letters and tone marks. Read it together with the audio and the Chinese characters in a word entry. Listen to the whole word, then try it aloud, paying attention to tone as well as the consonants and vowels.
A Chinese word may contain one character or several, so keep meaning and context close as you read. Use the Dictionary to revisit entries and their available examples. Review words you have learned, then notice where the same characters appear in another phrase you encounter.
Mandarin often expresses meaning through word order, particles, and context rather than verb endings. Grammar Center explains patterns such as questions and measure words. Compare the examples and take one pattern back to your practice instead of trying to translate an English sentence word for word.
