Start with the thing you are identifying
A demonstrative helps the listener locate a reference rather than merely name its kind. It may point to an object in the room, identify something already mentioned, or organize a text. The traditional formal spatial pattern associates este with the speaker’s side, esse with the listener’s side, and aquele with something farther from both. Treat that pattern as a useful convention, especially for careful writing, rather than a complete description of every Brazilian conversation. Gestures, location words, shared attention, and the surrounding topic also make reference clear. Before choosing a form, identify what the listener can actually see or recover. A demonstrative without a recognizable reference may be grammatically well formed but still leave the message unclear.
Este livro aqui é meu.
This book here is mine, following the formal speaker side pattern.
The demonstrative and aqui identify the book near the speaker.
Aquela casa lá é antiga.
That house over there is old.
The feminine demonstrative identifies a house at a distance.
Match the noun’s gender and number
With a stated noun, the demonstrative agrees with that noun. The families include este, esta, estes, estas; esse, essa, esses, essas; and aquele, aquela, aqueles, aquelas. The speaker’s gender has no effect on this selection. A woman pointing to a masculine book still uses a masculine form; a man pointing to a feminine table uses a feminine one. Learn the noun’s gender with its article so that the agreement is recoverable later. A demonstrative normally supplies the identifying role before the noun without an additional definite article in the basic patterns here. Check number as carefully as gender because one object and several objects can easily be confused when a conversation moves quickly.
Estas mesas estão livres.
These tables are available.
The demonstrative preserves feminine plural agreement with the tables.
Aqueles documentos são importantes.
Those documents over there are important.
The distant reference is masculine plural, matching the documents.
Carry noun features into a demonstrative
Point to several distant feminine houses.
- The noun is feminine plural.
- Choose the distant family.
- Preserve both features in the demonstrative.
Aquelas casas.

Recognize Brazilian overlap without losing precision
Brazilian usage does not always maintain the full textbook distinction between este and esse. Research on demonstratives documents competition and changing distributions across different kinds of texts and usage. That evidence does not justify saying that every Brazilian speaker follows one replacement rule in every setting. It does explain why you may hear esse aqui for something near the speaker. A learner should understand that ordinary pattern while also being able to follow an explicit formal convention when a writing task requires it. In conversation, location words and gestures can supply the needed precision. The challenge avoids rejecting a legitimate Brazilian form merely because another textbook form could have been chosen. Its incorrect options change the reference or fail agreement.
Esse livro aqui é interessante.
This book here is interesting, using a common Brazilian conversational pattern.
The location word clarifies a nearby reference even though the demonstrative is esse.
Essa cadeira aqui está livre.
This chair here is available, in a Brazilian conversational pattern.
The demonstrative agrees with the feminine chair, and aqui makes its location clear.
Keep agreement when the noun is understood
A demonstrative can stand without repeating a noun when the context makes that noun clear. If two bags are being compared, prefiro esta can mean I prefer this one. The understood feminine bag still controls the form. Removing the noun therefore does not turn every demonstrative into a neutral or unchanging word. Recover the reference before choosing the ending. If the conversation switches from a bag to a book, the relevant grammatical gender changes even when both objects are held by the same person. Be especially careful when translating English this one, which does not show the same gender distinction. A short reference is useful when the alternatives are visible or have just been named; otherwise, repeat the noun.
Entre as duas bolsas, prefiro esta.
Between the two bags, I prefer this one.
The feminine singular form keeps the understood bag’s features.
Os livros azuis? Quero aqueles.
The blue books? I want those over there.
The standalone demonstrative retains masculine plural reference to the books.

Use isto, isso and aquilo for a neutral reference
The forms isto, isso, and aquilo do not vary for gender or number. They can refer to an unidentified thing, a situation, or an idea expressed by a whole statement. They do not normally accompany a noun in the way este livro does. For example, isso é importante can evaluate something just said. The English word that therefore requires attention: does it point to a particular feminine noun, or summarize a whole idea? The neutral form is not a general substitute for noun agreement. It serves a different reference pattern. In a conversation, you may clarify what the neutral word refers to by naming the action or restating the relevant idea, especially when several earlier statements could be intended.
Isso é importante.
That is important, referring to an idea just mentioned.
The unchanged neutral form can refer to a whole idea rather than a gendered noun.
O que é aquilo?
What is that over there, asking about an unidentified thing?
The neutral distant form asks about something not yet identified with a noun.
Combine de and em with demonstratives
The prepositions de and em commonly combine with demonstratives in writing. With the first family, de produces deste and its agreeing forms, while the corresponding em pattern produces forms such as neste. The same principle gives desse, nesse, daquele, and naquele. Neutral forms also contract, as in disso and nisso. The preposition still has a grammatical job even though the result is one written word. A verb requiring de cannot simply take an em contraction because both point to the same object. First identify the required relationship, then choose the demonstrative and agreement. This connects the lesson to familiar preposition patterns rather than treating every contraction as an unrelated vocabulary item.
Gosto deste livro.
I like this book.
The required de combines with the masculine singular demonstrative.
Os documentos estão nessa pasta.
The documents are in that folder.
The location preposition combines with the feminine demonstrative in nessa.
Recover the hidden preposition
Say that you like this masculine book.
- Liking in the taught construction requires de.
- Choose singular masculine este.
- Combine them into deste before the noun.
Compare your reasoning

Make time and textual reference explicit
Demonstratives also locate a reference in time or in the organization of a text. A formal style guide commonly uses este for the current period, esse to resume something just mentioned, and este to introduce what will follow. Actual usage is more flexible than a mechanical rule based on the previous word, especially in Brazilian conversation. Use the convention when it helps a reader follow your text, and add an explicit noun or time phrase when ambiguity remains. A phrase such as nesta semana can identify the current week, while a distant past scene can be introduced with naquela época. The reference time comes from the message as a whole. Do not translate every English this or that without checking the surrounding situation.
Nesta semana, trabalho em casa.
This week, I work from home, referring to the current week.
The contraction and time noun identify the current period in the formal convention.
Tenho este objetivo: terminar o curso.
I have this goal: to finish the course, introducing the goal in careful writing.
The demonstrative points forward to the explanation after the colon.

Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.
Your turn 1
In an everyday Brazilian exchange, identify a nearby feminine chair as available, using essa aqui.
Compare with a model

This chair here is available.
The demonstrative agrees with the noun, while the location word makes the nearby reference clear.
- Did you preserve the chair’s gender?
- Is the location clear in the conversation?
Your turn 2
Respond to an important idea just mentioned, without repeating a noun.
Compare with a model
Isso é importante.
That is important.
The neutral demonstrative refers to the idea as a whole and stays unchanged.
- Are you referring to an idea rather than selecting a noun related form?
- Does the verb treat the neutral reference as singular?
