Portuguese Imperfect: Past Habits, Descriptions and Ongoing Actions

Elementary to intermediate

Use the imperfect to describe a past situation from within, including customary actions, descriptions, and activity already in progress. Regular ar verbs use forms such as falava; regular er and ir verbs use comia and abria. The tense presents a viewpoint. It does not claim that an event literally never ended.

Describe a past situation from the inside

Imagine pausing a story while its scene is already unfolding. The imperfect can describe what the place was like, what people usually did, or what someone was doing at that moment. It does not place the situation’s beginning or endpoint in the foreground. This is a choice of viewpoint, not a claim that the activity continues forever or remains unfinished today. A former routine can have stopped years ago and still be described with an imperfect. Likewise, a short action can appear in this tense when the narrator views it while it unfolds. To choose thoughtfully, ask what this sentence contributes to the story: a setting or habit, or a completed occurrence that advances it. The practice specifies the intended perspective.

Naquela época, eu morava perto da escola.

At that time, I lived near the school, describing the former situation with the imperfect.

The speaker presents a residence as the background situation rather than a completed stay.

Quando eu era criança, lia no quintal.

When I was a child, I used to read in the yard.

The description and customary reading belong to the past scene.

Build the regular ar pattern

For a regular ar verb, remove the infinitive ending and add the imperfect endings. The forms practiced here are ava for eu and for ele, ela, or você; ávamos for nós; and avam for eles, elas, or vocês. Thus one person falava, we falávamos, and several people falavam. A common ending can express more than one subject, so include a subject when the context would otherwise be unclear. The accent in the we form marks its stress and belongs in careful writing. Do not build this tense from the first person present form. Returning to the infinitive gives a more reliable regular stem and helps you keep the verb family separate from the requested person.

Nós falávamos baixo.

We used to speak softly, using the imperfect.

The first person plural ending includes the written accent in falávamos.

Elas estudavam à noite.

They used to study at night, referring to women.

The regular third person plural imperfect ends in avam.

Build a regular group habit

Say that we used to speak Portuguese, using nós.

  1. Start from falar and remove ar.
  2. Choose the first person plural imperfect ending.
  3. Retain the accent marking stress.

Nós falávamos português.

Share the ia pattern across er and ir verbs

Regular er and ir verbs use the same main imperfect endings in the persons introduced here: ia, íamos, and iam. Remove the infinitive ending before adding them, producing comia from comer and abria from abrir. The coincidence of endings does not erase the underlying verb or its meaning. Learn a small contrast in a familiar setting, such as eating lunch and opening a shop, to connect the forms to actual actions. Written accents matter in the we forms comíamos and abríamos. Their final letters also distinguish we from they. Because the singular forms are shared by several subjects, a named person or explicit pronoun can be useful when a story changes its main participant.

Nós comíamos cedo.

We used to eat early.

The regular we form uses íamos, preserving both plural agreement and stress.

Ela abria a loja às oito.

She used to open the store at eight.

The regular ir verb takes the singular imperfect ending ia.

Retrieve era and tinha as useful complete forms

Two especially useful imperfect verbs are ser and ter. Use era, éramos, and eram for the selected persons of being, and tinha, tínhamos, and tinham for having. These forms support descriptions of identity, age, possession, and circumstances. Portuguese commonly expresses age with having, so a childhood description can include eu tinha nove anos. Choose the construction from Portuguese rather than substituting a word for English was. In each clause, keep the subject separate from the noun that follows the verb. Having several books does not make the verb plural when one person owns them. In a narrative, these irregular forms often provide the quiet background against which a later completed event becomes significant.

Eu tinha nove anos.

I was nine years old.

Portuguese expresses the age with the imperfect of having.

Nós éramos vizinhos.

We were neighbors, describing a former relationship.

The plural subject takes the irregular imperfect éramos.

Notice vinha and punha without extending their stems everywhere

The imperfect of coming includes vinha, vínhamos, and vinham. Putting has punha, púnhamos, and punham. Their spelling differs substantially from the infinitives vir and pôr, so learn a short meaningful phrase with each rather than inventing a regular stem. These forms do not tell you how every other tense of the same verb works. In particular, a past form beginning with one stem does not license that stem throughout the entire paradigm. The everyday verb ir also has the useful imperfect forms ia, íamos, and iam, which can resemble endings you have just studied. Context and the whole word identify whether the sentence describes going, coming, or another action. Read the direction and destination as part of the message.

Ela vinha aqui aos domingos.

She used to come here on Sundays.

The irregular imperfect of coming is vinha for the singular subject.

Nós púnhamos as chaves na gaveta.

We used to put the keys in the drawer.

The irregular we form of putting is púnhamos.

Keep nós and a gente in their own agreement patterns

Brazilian Portuguese commonly uses both nós and a gente to refer to a group including the speaker. In the standard agreement practiced here, nós takes a first person plural verb, while a gente takes a third person singular verb. Thus nós falávamos and a gente falava can describe the same group with different grammatical subjects. Similarly, você uses third person singular agreement and vocês third person plural. The real number of people and the grammatical form are related but are not identical concepts. When rewriting a sentence, change the pronoun and its verb together rather than exchanging only the first word. Regional spoken agreement has additional variation; the choices here explicitly practice these widely taught written patterns.

A gente comia aqui.

We used to eat here, using a gente with standard agreement.

The group meaning combines with a grammatically singular verb.

Vocês falavam português em casa.

You all used to speak Portuguese at home.

Plural vocês selects the third person plural imperfect.

Use the imperfect to support a completed event

A background clause can accompany a completed event without being less real or less important. In a sentence about reading when the phone rang, the imperfect presents reading as already underway, while the completed past introduces the ringing. A progressive construction with estar and a gerund can make the ongoing activity especially explicit, but the simple imperfect can also supply that viewpoint. Do not add a helping verb automatically because the English translation contains was. Portuguese may express the relevant background with one finite word. To revise a short story, label the job of each clause first, then check its forms. A tense decision grounded in the narrative’s purpose is more useful than a rule based only on whether a sentence includes yesterday.

Eu lia quando o telefone tocou.

I was reading when the phone rang, using the simple imperfect for the background.

Reading is viewed from within; the completed ringing enters that ongoing scene.

A sala estava vazia quando chegamos.

The room was empty when we arrived.

The imperfect describes the room’s state at the time of the completed arrival.

Set a scene before an event

Say that you were reading when a friend arrived.

  1. Treat reading as the ongoing background.
  2. Use the imperfect of ler.
  3. Report the arrival as a completed event.
Compare your reasoning

Eu lia quando uma amiga chegou.

Common mistakes

Check the construction

Instead ofNaquela época, eu moro perto da escola.

For this meaningNaquela época, eu morava perto da escola.

Preserve the intended meaning

Instead ofNós era vizinhos.

For this meaningNós éramos vizinhos.

The singular verb does not agree with the explicit plural subject. The plural subject takes the irregular imperfect éramos.

Place each element carefully

Instead ofA gente comíamos aqui.

For this meaningA gente comia aqui.

This mixes the specified singular agreement pattern with a first person plural ending. The group meaning combines with a grammatically singular verb.

From understanding to using

Make your own example.

Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.

Your turn 1

Describe a former routine in which your group ate early, using a gente.

Compare with a model

A gente comia cedo.

We used to eat early.

The routine is presented with the imperfect, and the group expression takes standard singular agreement.

  • Does the verb agree grammatically with a gente?
  • Have you described a former routine rather than a present habit?

Your turn 2

Describe yourself at age ten and say that you used to come to this park.

Compare with a model

Eu tinha dez anos e vinha a este parque.

I was ten years old and used to come to this park.

The age construction uses having, and coming has an irregular imperfect stem.

  • Did you use the Portuguese age construction?
  • Did you retrieve the imperfect of coming rather than invent a regular form?
