Russian origins: iz, s and ot with the genitive

Beginner to intermediate

Russian uses из, с, and от with the genitive to express different kinds of origin. Compare из школы, from school, с работы, from work, and от друга, from a friend. Choose the preposition from the relationship and the usual place expression, then choose the genitive form. The English word from alone cannot select all three correctly.

Make origin a relationship rather than a translation

An origin can be a place someone leaves, a person who sends something, or a point from which someone moves away. Russian distinguishes these relationships with prepositions. The three prepositions in this lesson all govern the genitive, so the case remains stable while the intended relationship changes. Knowing the case is only half of building the expression.

With из, the source is often conceived as coming out of an interior or from a place whose usual location expression uses в. With с, departure often corresponds to a location expressed with на, including surfaces and conventional activity expressions. With от, the source can be a person, an institution represented as a sender, or a point away from which movement occurs.

These are useful organizing patterns, not literal pictures that solve every Russian preposition. A workplace can be a building, yet the ordinary expression from work is с работы. Learn a place together with its familiar location and origin expressions. This reduces the temptation to select a preposition from a drawing of whether something has walls or a roof.

Я из Москвы.

I am from Moscow.

Это письмо от друга.

This letter is from a friend.

Form the genitive before adding more details

Many masculine consonant nouns add а in the singular genitive: друг becomes друга, and магазин becomes магазина. A regular neuter noun in о also commonly has а, as in окно and окна. Soft stems often have я, including учитель and учителя. Learn which noun pattern you are using rather than applying one ending to all source expressions.

A noun in а commonly changes to ы, as in работа and работы. After the relevant Russian spelling rule consonants, the written ending is и: книга has книги. A noun in я also commonly has и, as in неделя and недели. A feminine soft sign noun has its own genitive form, such as дверь and двери.

Proper names participate in these patterns when they decline. Москва becomes Москвы, and Анна becomes Анны. Some foreign names are indeclinable, so a missing ending is not necessarily an error. The exercises supply ordinary declining nouns and names, allowing you to focus on the relationship and verify the resulting form.

Он вышел из магазина.

He came out of the store.

Это сообщение от Анны.

This message is from Anna.

Pair iz with familiar v expressions

A helpful place set is в школе, at school, в школу, to school, and из школы, from school. The first uses the prepositional case for location, the second the accusative for the destination, and the third the genitive for the origin. The noun refers to the same place, but its role in the sentence changes.

The same comparison works with a regular store expression: в магазине, in the store, and из магазина, from the store. Learn such pairs as connected meanings. They are more informative than memorizing a list in which every preposition is assigned one English word. English at school and in the store do not prevent Russian from using в in both location expressions.

An origin expression does not always describe motion happening at that moment. Я из Москвы can identify a person’s home city or background, even while the person stands somewhere else. Context determines whether from names biographical origin, the start of a journey, or another source relation. The case is still selected by из, not by the presence of a motion verb.

Она вернулась из школы.

She returned from school.

Мы из небольшого города.

We are from a small city.

Build a place pair

Change at school into from school.

  1. Start with familiar location в школе.
  2. Choose source preposition из.
  3. Put школа in the genitive, школы.

из школы

Pair s with familiar na expressions

Compare на работе, at work, with с работы, from work. The location and source use different prepositions and different cases. A similar pair is на столе, on the table, and со стола, off the table. The expanded form со helps pronunciation in particular sound combinations; it does not select a different case from с.

These place pairs combine physical and conventional meanings. A table supplies a clear surface example, while work names an activity or workplace in a conventional expression. Some geographical and institutional combinations vary or have special usage. This lesson uses stable everyday examples so that learning the pattern does not require making claims about every place name.

The same spelling с also introduces company, but then it governs the instrumental. Compare с работы, from work, with с другом, with a friend. The noun ending and meaning distinguish the constructions. Do not assume that seeing the preposition is enough to identify the case without considering what the entire phrase says.

Я возвращаюсь с работы.

I am returning from work.

Она взяла книгу со стола.

She took the book off the table.

Use ot for senders and movement away

A letter or message from a person commonly uses от: письмо от сестры, a letter from a sister. The person is the source or sender. The genitive ending remains necessary even when English supplies no visible change in the name. Saying a message from Anna therefore gives сообщение от Анны, not an unchanged nominative name.

От is not restricted to people. It can express moving away from a reference point, such as от окна, away from the window, or measure distance from a place. Conversely, not every mention of a person after from is explained by one universal rule. The verb and intended relationship still matter, particularly when more complex idioms or causes are involved.

A useful three way comparison is from inside a building with из, off a surface with с, and away from a reference point with от. A person can move away from a door without having passed through it. The preposition adds that distinction; the genitive noun identifies the reference point but does not by itself tell the whole spatial story.

Это подарок от сестры.

This is a gift from a sister.

Он отошёл от окна.

He moved away from the window.

Replace the source with a pronoun

Genitive pronouns include меня, тебя, его, её, нас, вас, and их. After these ordinary source prepositions, third person forms usually acquire initial n: от него, от неё, and от них. First and second person pronouns retain their own forms. A letter from me is письмо от меня, while a letter from her is письмо от неё.

The genitive pronoun may look like an accusative form, but that shared appearance does not change its role. In a source phrase with от, the preposition governs the genitive. Looking only at the pronoun’s spelling can therefore be misleading. Name the construction when explaining an answer rather than claiming that one visible form always belongs to one case.

When the antecedent is a place or container, a pronoun can also refer back to it, but natural Russian often prefers a location adverb or repeats a short noun in beginner conversation. Practice person sources first because their intended referents are clear. Keep the distinction between familiar тебя and polite or plural вас when addressing the sender directly.

Это письмо от меня.

This letter is from me.

Это сообщение от неё.

This message is from her.

Replace a sender with a pronoun

Replace Anna in a message from Anna with her.

  1. The sender phrase uses от.
  2. Choose the third person feminine genitive form.
  3. Use the prepositional n form неё.

Keep descriptions and meaning aligned

An adjective in a source phrase agrees with its noun in genitive case, gender, and number. A masculine phrase can be из нового дома, from the new house; a feminine phrase can be с новой работы, from the new job. The adjective and noun use different visible endings, so agreement does not mean copying the same letters onto each word.

The masculine and neuter adjective ending written ого is normally pronounced with a v sound in its final consonant. This pronunciation belongs to the ending, as in нового; it is not a rule that every written g anywhere in Russian changes to v. Learn the entire adjective form with an audio model when practicing the phrase aloud.

Genitive plurals have several patterns and irregularities, so this lesson does not pretend that adding one ending produces every plural source. You can already communicate many useful origins with singular place names and person pronouns. Before expanding to a new noun, check its actual genitive form, then preserve the same process: identify the source relationship, choose the preposition, and make every descriptive word agree.

Мы вышли из нового дома.

We came out of the new house.

Она вернулась с новой работы.

She returned from her new job.

Both the adjective and the noun belong to a masculine genitive phrase.

From understanding to using

Make your own example.

Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.

Your turn 1

Say you returned from school, then identify a message from your sister.

Compare with a model

Я вернулся из школы. Это сообщение от сестры.

I returned from school. This message is from my sister.

The first sentence uses из for a place source. The second uses от for a sender. Both nouns are genitive; a female speaker would use вернулась.

  • Did you distinguish the place from the sender?
  • Did the past verb match your intended speaker?

Your turn 2

Say she returned from work and took a book off the table.

Compare with a model

Она вернулась с работы и взяла книгу со стола.

She returned from work and took a book off the table.

Both source phrases correspond to familiar locations with на. Со is the expanded form in со стола.

  • Did the two nouns take genitive forms?
  • Did you retain the accusative книгу for the thing she took?
