Portuguese Conditional Requests: Gostaria, Poderia and Seria

Elementary to intermediate

The form often called futuro do pretérito in Brazilian grammar can soften a request, wish, or suggestion: gostaria de, I would like, and você poderia, could you. Regular forms add endings to the infinitive, while frequent irregulars include faria, diria, and traria. Context determines whether the sentence is a request, a possibility, or another use of the conditional.

Identify whose wish or action the sentence expresses

A conditional request often presents a wish or action more tentatively than a direct demand. Gostaria can express what the speaker would like, while você poderia asks whether the listener could do something. The two forms therefore organize participants differently. A sentence about your own permission may use eu poderia; a request for the listener’s help uses a listener subject. The form does not guarantee politeness regardless of context. The favor, relationship, wording, and tone still matter. This lesson concentrates on ordinary practical requests and suggestions rather than treating every conditional as a social formula. Before selecting an ending, decide who should act and who wants the result. That participant check prevents a grammatically smooth sentence from asking for the wrong person’s action.

Eu gostaria de uma informação.

I would like some information.

The speaker expresses a wish, and the liking construction keeps de before its complement.

Você poderia repetir?

Could you repeat that?

The listener is the subject of the possible action.

Build regular forms from the infinitive

Regular conditional forms can be built by adding endings to the full infinitive. The persons used here take ia for eu, ele, ela, or você; íamos for nós; and iam for eles, elas, or vocês. This gives falaria, comeria, and abriria, with the verb family vowel retained inside the infinitive. The accent in the we form is part of careful spelling. Do not confuse this structure with the imperfect, which has different formation even when an ending looks similar. The shared singular conditional form may refer to several subjects, so write an explicit subject when context could be unclear. Start with the infinitive, identify the intended person, and then check whether the verb has a special stem.

Nós falaríamos com ela.

We would speak with her.

The full infinitive combines with the first person plural conditional ending.

Eu abriria a janela.

I would open the window, using the conditional form.

The regular conditional preserves the infinitive abrir before its ending.

Learn faria, diria and traria as a small irregular set

Doing or making, saying, and bringing use the special conditional stems seen in faria, diria, and traria. Their endings still identify person and number, so the we forms are faríamos, diríamos, and traríamos. The irregularity is in the stem rather than a new set of person endings. Do not construct these words by mechanically keeping the full infinitive. At the same time, avoid inventing irregular forms for every frequent verb: poderia and teria follow their own established forms. Useful whole phrases make the distinctions easier to retrieve. A statement about what you would bring to an event gives traria a meaningful context, while a proposed action gives faria a purpose beyond reciting a conjugation chart.

Eu traria um mapa.

I would bring a map.

Bringing uses the irregular conditional stem in traria.

Nós faríamos uma cópia.

We would make a copy.

The special stem combines with a first person plural conditional ending.

Coordinate the subject with the request’s ending

A request can involve the speaker, the listener, a group, or a thing being evaluated. In standard Brazilian agreement, você takes a singular third person form, vocês a plural third person form, nós a first person plural form, and a gente a singular third person form. A question directed to one person can nevertheless have another grammatical subject. Asking whether rooms would be available uses the plural rooms as subject, so the verb must be plural even though one employee answers. Identify the subject of each clause rather than assuming that every request verb agrees with the listener. This becomes especially important in a two sentence exchange that first expresses your wish and then asks about an object’s availability.

Vocês poderiam esperar um momento?

Could you all wait a moment?

The addressed group requires the plural conditional poderiam.

Essas salas estariam disponíveis amanhã?

Would those rooms be available tomorrow?

The rooms are the plural grammatical subject, independently of who answers.

Find the actual subject of a question

Ask whether two rooms would be available tomorrow.

  1. The rooms are the grammatical subject.
  2. Choose plural estariam.
  3. Keep the adjective plural as well.
Compare your reasoning

As duas salas estariam disponíveis amanhã?

Keep the following action in its required construction

After poderia, the action commonly appears as an infinitive without an intervening preposition: poderia explicar. After gostaria, retain the liking construction with de, as in gostaria de falar. These two useful requests therefore cannot be built by swapping only their first verb and leaving every other word untouched. The conditional carries person and the tentative meaning, while the infinitive names the desired action. A short object can stand before the main verb in Brazilian usage, as in poderia me ajudar. That placement is accepted in educated Brazilian patterns and should not be rejected automatically. Build the request with full participants first, then choose any pronouns. Check the verb’s construction before polishing its tone.

Eu gostaria de falar com você.

I would like to speak with you.

The conditional liking expression retains de before the infinitive.

Você poderia me ajudar?

Could you help me?

The modal takes an infinitive, and the short object may precede that main verb in Brazilian usage.

Build a request around the right complement

Say that you would like to speak with the listener.

  1. Choose first person gostaria.
  2. Keep de as part of the construction.
  3. Use an infinitive for speaking and a full phrase for the listener.

Eu gostaria de falar com você.

Use the conditional for a suggestion or tentative evaluation

The conditional can present a proposed choice without claiming that it will definitely happen. Seria melhor can introduce a suggestion, and a phrase such as com mais tempo can establish the condition under which an action would be possible. An adjective in the sentence still agrees with the noun it describes. The conditional does not remove that separate relationship. When practicing a suggestion, state a practical reason and a specific action rather than offering an empty polite formula. Also distinguish a tentative possibility from a future prediction: changing the verb can change how strongly the speaker commits to the outcome. Full hypothetical sentences have additional patterns in their if clauses. The current lesson focuses on the result or suggestion and does not prescribe one form after every occurrence of if.

Seria melhor esperar aqui.

It would be better to wait here.

The conditional evaluation presents waiting as a suggestion.

Com mais tempo, eu faria outra revisão.

With more time, I would do another review.

The condition is having more time, and the conditional gives the possible action.

Recognize other courteous forms without inventing errors

Portuguese offers more than one way to make a courteous request. An imperfect such as queria can soften a present request even though the same form also describes past wanting in another context. It should not be dismissed as a claim that the speaker no longer wants anything. Likewise, not every conditional sentence is a request: context may establish a hypothetical action or a future viewed from a past point. The lesson’s productive aim is to make the intention clear with useful patterns such as gostaria de and poderia. In a negative request or wish, preserve the negative’s scope so you do not reverse the message. Evaluate a full exchange by its participants, construction, and purpose rather than by whether it contains one supposed universal politeness word.

Eu queria um café, por favor.

I would like a coffee, please, using the courteous imperfect in a present request.

The setting gives the imperfect a courteous request meaning rather than only past time.

Eu não gostaria de atrapalhar.

I would not like to get in the way.

The negative precedes the conditional and preserves the liking construction with an infinitive.

Common mistakes

Check the construction

Instead ofNós gostaríamos de uma informação.

For this meaningEu gostaria de uma informação.

This changes the requester from I to we. The speaker expresses a wish, and the liking construction keeps de before its complement.

Preserve the intended meaning

Instead ofEssas salas estaria disponíveis amanhã?

For this meaningEssas salas estariam disponíveis amanhã?

The singular verb fails to agree with the plural rooms. The rooms are the plural grammatical subject, independently of who answers.

Place each element carefully

Instead ofFoi melhor esperar aqui.

For this meaningSeria melhor esperar aqui.

This evaluates a past situation instead of offering the requested tentative suggestion. The conditional evaluation presents waiting as a suggestion.

From understanding to using

Make your own example.

Try these without answer choices. Say your answer aloud or write it below, then compare your reasoning with the model.

Your turn 1

Ask one person whether they could send the address to you. Use a Brazilian pronoun placement before the infinitive.

Compare with a model

Você poderia me mandar o endereço?

Could you send me the address?

The listener is the subject, the speaker is the recipient, and the main action remains infinitive.

  • Who performs the sending?
  • Who receives the address?
  • Did the second verb remain infinitive?

Your turn 2

Say that your group would like two quiet rooms, using nós.

Compare with a model

Nós gostaríamos de dois quartos tranquilos.

We would like two quiet rooms.

The conditional agrees with we, the construction retains de, and the adjective agrees with the requested rooms.

  • Did the conditional use the accented we ending?
  • Does the noun phrase preserve masculine plural agreement?
